Lucas is a talented drummer in an up-and-coming post-hardcore band called Odd Death. Or at least, he was.

We begin our story exactly one year after the band broke up. After a massive falling out between the band and it's lead singer, Lucas and his other band-mates are left to pick up the pieces.
Lucas had struggled with chronic depression his entire life, but this is the lowest point for him. Every day is a struggle for survival, between his shitty food service job, a tenuous roommate situation, and his long list of regrets, he has a difficult time seeing why he should continue. Every day is the same. Every day is terrible.
(A side note- he also has undiagnosed autism and his depression is part of his extreme burnout).

Lucas enjoys forgetting about his problems by attending parties, concerts, and clubs whenever he's able. He drinks and smokes, plays video games, and skateboards home to his apartment at night. He loves anything that will help him forget his problems, and has a bad habit of avoiding help at every turn.
Often, he wakes up in his bed, unsure of how he got home- with nightmares of terrible creatures fresh in his mind, and unexplained bruises and cuts on his body.

Unbeknownst to him, The City has bestowed him with the ability to merge with the world around him. Early in the story, Lucas learns that he can manipulate the matter that makes up The City itself, in order to teleport. Though at first he is only able to do so randomly and in instances of life-threatening danger, he slowly learns to control his abilities and teleport to any place he can visualize.

He learns, through the course of the story, that his true power isn't really teleportation.
He is slowly becoming one with The City, and can merge himself mentally and physically with objects and people- if he can hold eye contact with them.

But this has a drawback- he is slowly losing himself, becoming unable to control when or how he merges. He needs to escape from The City before he becomes part of it.

Lucas lives together with his best friend and roommate, Kieran Agarwal.

Kieran and Lucas have been best friends since Lucas transferred to their inner-city high school in sophomore year. Lucas was shy, rebellious, and always clad in an oversized hoodie.

Kieran took a liking to him as they both had a shared interest in music and video games, and Kieran enjoyed having someone to listen to his ramblings.

They were both misfits, and Kieran would often goad Lucas to go on mischievous adventures with him. The two have been inseparable ever since, even as Lucas went to college.

He decided to stick around and go to City University just to be close to his friend and what he was familiar with.

Lucas also knows Zephyrus from his childhood- they both went by different names back then. They were his elementary school crush- before Zephyr moved away. Lucas has dreamed of meeting them again ever since.

Zephyrus later becomes a mentor figure to Lucas, teaching him to hone his abilities- and urging him to escape The City before it's too late.
