Rolling over the meadows and weaving between pine trees, the dark clouds that were previously in the far distance now were circling overhead, indicating that Valhalla was now eerily close to her objective – humans.

Truthfully, she didn’t know much about them, if anything at all, the stories from her foalhood being few and far between. It was something that her birth herd didn’t dwell on much, humans were considered simply a distant threat, nothing that needed to be worried over. And for the most part, they were right. It was Kestrel who later deepened her knowledge of the creatures, sharing tales of his own encounters and the dangers that the humans brought with them. She would exhale a snort and roll her eyes at him every time, Kestrel’s tellings were always incredibly dramatic so it was often difficult to tell if something was truly dangerous or if it was simply her brother adding the extra spice.

Regardless, humans were a rarity in Valhalla’s eyes, and this may be her only chance to see them! Excitement ran up her legs and bubbled in her chest, what do they look like? What do they sound like? What sort of weird contraptions will they have? It is said that humans were dextrous and intuitive creatures, harbouring an ability to create weird objects for purposes beyond a horse’s comprehension. Maybe she could snag one!

The roan mare grinned to herself, eager to see her brother’s expression once she returns with a human trophy. The complete hysterics he’ll be in! Containing a chuckle, Val continued trotting through the sparse pine forest, looking up at the inky black sky occasionally to check where the circling dark smoke was coming from.

Her overhead checks would no longer be needed though, now it was distant chatter that stole her attention. Val angled her ears forward and lightly walked towards the source of the sounds, her dark, oaky eyes wide and desperately searching for early glimpses of human forms. Unknowingly, she steadily began accelerating her walk into a trot, the chattering growing louder as she kept getting closer. Through the trees, Valhalla could notice a warm light flickering against the undergrowth and an intoxicating, smokey stench drifted down. The toxic tang made her hack up a cough – was there a fire?? Now the smoke would make sense.

If Kestrel had been here, he would be shaking in his hooves, pleading to turn back and head for the hills. But Valhalla simply blinked the smoke out of her eyes and walked onwards, careful to take lighter and more calculated steps. She may be bold, but she was no fool, it’s better to remain undercover, take a quick look and head home – snagging a trophy only if there’s a chance!

But all her thoughts of trophies and her brother vanished once she peeked her head through the overgrowth, the trees opening up to a clearing that was bustling with noise and life.

“H-humans.” The mare gasped under her breathe, her brown eyes widening and darting everywhere, desperate to take in everything she was seeing. A small, contained fire burned in the middle of the clearing and the humans were gathered around it, chanting and making noise around it with wild gestures. The sight of the fire caused anxiety to rise up Valhalla’s throat, every bone in her body was telling her to run, get out of there! But the roan mare stood her ground, wanting to see more – to learn more.

The humans hadn’t noticed her yet, her dark coat doing an extraordinarily great job of blending her into the inky darkness of the night. Val took the moment to stand and watch, poking her head out from behind a pine tree, ears angled forward in intense curiosity. They weren’t at all what she expected, colourful and all with different pelts, booming voices that surely gave away their location to potential predators, and many odd items spread across the clearing. There were only 3 humans, yet they made such a ruckus. And the fire that danced wildly at the centre seemed to be of no worry to them, she even witnessed them throwing sticks in to feed it. But above all, the humans seemed agitated, cackling amongst themselves like wolves fighting over prey. Something was amiss with this group.

It was amusing though, weirdly enough. Their odd expressions and flailing around making for an interesting spectacle, it made the mare wonder what could be troubling such creatures. Curiously entertaining. But Valhalla couldn’t stay long, after spending a couple more moments spying and taking everything in, a cold breeze reminded her to head back to her brother. However, as she began turning away, her eye caught site of something shiny.

Swivelling back around, Valhalla carefully tread closer and examined the object; it was round and flat, its white colouration holding a glossy finish to it. Inhaling, there was no scent on it – what in the star’s name was it? One thing was for sure, it was unmistakeably human. Giving a quick glance back at the people, Valhalla smushed her nose against the item and tried to grip her teeth around the edge. The mare spent a few seconds fighting for a grip, her teeth lightly clacking against the glossy shell, but finally she was able to hoist it up.

Lifting her head, Val got ready to trot away but as soon as she paused for a second look back, the white shell slipped out of her grip and fell to the floor with a crash. Immediately the cackling humans turned to face her, their eyes equally as wide with shock as her. There was a split second where time stood still, everyone staring at each other breathlessly. Until one made a move; a human grabbed a long roll of twine and began walking towards Val, eyes glinting with an almost predatory intent. Her heart beating loud in her ears, Valhalla didn’t wait around to find out what that twine was for and dashed out of the pine forest and towards the hills from which she came.

Although the initial shock frightened her, at the top of the hill Val began to slow down to a walk, certain that the humans wouldn’t be able to catch up to her. Afterall, how far could their short legs take them?

“Hah... That was an adventure and a half. A shame I could take a souvenir-” Val’s voice trailed off into a whisper as her heart dropped to her stomach. From the pine forest could be heard pounding of hooves, horses erupting out of the underbrush. Needing a double take, Valhalla looked closer, realising that those same humans were riding them. Utter terror now setting in, Val turned once more and began running. This time not looking back, not slowing down.
