Description
It's a Manticore!Done for a BIO200 assignment.
Manticores have a lion's body, a scorpion's tail, dragon's wings (optional), horns (also optional), a human face and lots of teeth.
This was a particularly fun assignment to do.

I never did understand where the wings ever came from. Evidently, someone didn't think a lion having a man's face and three rows of saw-like teeth was frightening enough.
I really like the gritty feeling of the piece, it fits the manticore well. He seems a bit unsteady though. I feel like the hind leg that is furthest away should be pushed back more so that it lines up more in perspective with the other hind leg.

Indeed, the idea of what a manticore is has evolved a bit over time. The wings are optional- they could also be swan wings, if I so chose. The horns are optional.
The tail could be either a scorpion's tail, a dragon's tail (with spikes!), or a lion's tail that just ends in a scorpion stinger. Some people forgo the human-face part entirely, opting to just design it as a lion with dragon wings and scorpian tail.
This is part of the reason I wanted to draw it, because it's so versatile.

Yeah, I did a research project for my final in Mythology class a couple of years ago (because for some odd reason I just love this creature) and I was amused that no one seemed to agree on the appearance of the tail. ;;; I prefer Ctesias the Cnidian's description of the beast most.

Oooh, Awesome! However, he may fall over since he has both of his right paws off the ground.

Oh! good eye.
I just realized the reference photo I was using of a lion actually had it's front paw planted on the ground, under it's body. I must have misinterpreted it due to the angle.
hmmm too late to change it now.

I think of it that he is skidding from being attacked
