Now for some of my own headcannons for my take on the changelings below the break. I tend to find it difficult to write my ideas down into a coherent passage so forgive me if it's such a jumble @.@

Their crowns are a symbol of power and a queen's rank is denoted by the number of 'pearls' that adorns their crowns. The more power the queen holds, the higher rank she is and subsequently, the more number of 'pearls'. This rank system generally allows other queens to gauge their own standing and take necessary measures. Some queens use it as a form of intimidation and others, though rarer, use it as a form of seeking potential allies. However, rivalries between queens are common as they take a lot of pride in their own hives and thus, generally avoid each other, especially if there is a huge imbalance in ranks.

A queen's crown also serves a practical purpose. Namely, to boost their psionic prowess as the crowns are forged by the queens themselves from their own shed chitin and precious rocks. These psionic powers helps a queen run her hive more efficiently by forging hive minds between her own drones/subjects to love distribution among others. With that being said, while a queen forges her own crown as she comes to start her own hive, her 'pearls' are earned and forged by her drones/subjects.

A queen must prove that she can lead and is worthy of her crown before she is recognised as a true queen by her drones/ subjects. That happens when she earns her first 'pearl'. The time taken for a queen to earn it varies between hives. Usually, she earns it by proving she can build and sustain the drones/subjects that choose to live under her rule. When the time comes, the 'pearl' is bestowed upon her by a representative and will then be incorporated into her crown. These 'pearls' are imbued with changeling magic by her drones/subject to further strengthen the bonds between themselves. These bonds can range to allowing a queen to draw upon magic reserves from her drones/subjects to fend off threats to having her drones/subject be in sync with the hive mind.

So, Queen Chrysalis is a four-pointed rank while Queen Chalybeous is only a one-pointed. Non-pointed is a queen who has not been recognised yet and has no 'pearls' to her crown. Her crown at that time is shaped rather more like a circlet before it is reforged to accommodate the new 'pearl'. A five-pointed is usually what a queen can achieve in her lifetime although there were extremely rare cases where a queen went higher than that.
