Well the only rule is the size.... Everything has to be 2.5" X 3.5", the same size as a playing card...... You trade them with other artists and keep them in binders like you would a baseball card. This explains it better than I can: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist…
If you trade the card it is an ATC (artist trading card)
If you wish to sell the card it is an ACEO (artist card original or edition...... I think)
i have done neither ..... So mine are really just cards.
There is is a group that meets locally to swap in person .... And there are a few groups on here .... But they seem unattended. I think the idea is a little out of date.... There is a social edge to the trading and little chance for exposure also the collections are cool
Because you can collect a bunch of little creations from other artists.
theoretically ....

Pretty, looks like an autumn mosaic. How do these trading cards work anyways?

Sounds fun actually, if I was in school or some other flesh and blood artistic community. Your foil ones are cool too.
On a related note, just moments ago I was trying to figure out what exactly a meme is. I read up on its original meaning as coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976, and what it has come to mean today. I've decided most of the examples I see online don't really fit either designation.

When I first came across the concept of ATCs... I enjoyed the idea that Art was alive and an element of everyday life, not a lofty isolated accomplishment. That somehow by trading the cards you would be able to tap into creativity as a conversation and a functioning language. ....But I lost that focus a bit.
I was working at Brady still, and the factory was( LOL) killing me a little... I felt like everything that was special or unique about me was shriveling ..... I think there was a part of me that was desperate to hold on to my selfish and unnecessary desires to create ... flesh things out ... make my own worthiness. (Sadly) I tied my ego to my ability to make and do things others could not.
When I became aware of that despicable pride I disliked it..... I didn't want what was left of my artwork to amount to showing off.
So I used the cards to deconstruct myself. I dove into my patterns first.... because they are mysterious even .... or i should say especially to me.
I toyed with the idea of trading them .... because I had been initially interested in the communal quality of ATCs ..... but just never did, they led me into other more internal projects ....like the 75 tiles( chobek.deviantart.com/gallery/… ).... actually even before the cards I made a little book for my cousin( chobeksbox.blogspot.com/2012/0… ) ..... I think that kind of started things.
Now I guess I am drawing animals, with the idea that I can do more spontaneous creatures in the future. It is weird to trace paths backwards.
Memes ... yeah it seems to have taken on a different meaning ... I guess you could step back and view the phenomenon of internet memes as a sort of cultural sweep and stretch and contort that zeitgeist to relate.... but as far as common usage goes, I think the original intent is not in peoples thoughts. I was aware of meme as a term because I read a few books by Dawkins .... but it wasn't until I read a wikipedia entry on him that I realized he coined the term.
He has some fascinating social concepts to run with. But I enjoy his descriptions of evolution most. I think it was one of his books that really opened my eyes about evolution ..... that things aren't moving towards some more advanced state, getting better... or becoming anything. They are simply surviving and breeding and passing on....or not. I enjoy the complexity of it .... the current state (or end result from my perspective) is formed by such a chaotic soup of whys and whats...
I wonder if Humans are evolving(much) anymore .... I mean civilization has made it possible for most to survive... sperm banks make it possible for most to breed .... and we are top of the food chain...

I have done that before!!! Then for about a week I carefully back up what I write after every paragraph ..... and then eventually, I don't and it happens again....
