If you use the curve/line tool it looks cleaner than using the pen tool.
What I normally do is click on one of the two, set it to marker, and adjust the size as close as I can to the size the base line uses. They can also get bigger than the pen tool. I will admit it might take a bit to get used to since you can only edit the curve about two times.
Heres a few examples of my work with me using the curve tool.
It's a more cleaner/smoother look than the pen tool.

Oh and if you set it to the marker setting then you won't have to re go over the area to fix the line work.
