It looks like they're laying on a rounded surface. A hill that slopes downward at the bottom of the picture.

I think that what you perceived as an epic fail is what made it look like they're on a hill sort of. The tree is going straight up, but the characters are at an inconsistent angle with the tree. Instead of looking like a total fail instead it has an interesting subtle hill effect. I was looking at how the angle worked with the different characters and how the ground must be and it started to look like that.
Don't get me wrong, I'll agree that the tree looks a little like an angle fail like you were saying, but the rest doesn't. I don't know the girl at the bottom center's name, but she makes the hill look more sloped where she is and I think that was the best place in the picture to put her with her drawn that way.
