Description All the WIP screenshots I took of her combined c: Sometimes I find something funny or something I really like and I like to save these ^^
The shading is inpired by the beautiful artwork of Kawatsuri <3 I hope you don't mind your drawover here, I thought it was too perfect not to include it ^^"

Process notes:
I think shading and lines were the most interesting part of this model, both I had some experience in from designing the 2d-style characters in an animation we're making.

I used the inverted normals method for the lines because I love that it gives real-time results unlike blender freestyle. I explored with the grease pencil lineart modifier, but the results weren't superior enough for me to switch to that method.
I like that the result is visible in the viewport but it's still camera dependent and I just like seeing the final result from all angles straight away.
I've been wanting to make a characters with extra thin lineart for a while after seeing gorgeous artwork people make with the freestyle method and this was finally the occasion.
Thin lines are a bit easier luckily, thick lines tend to "fly away" from the character, especially around the mouth, eyes and fine details.
I wanted to experiment with making the lines more handdrawn by adding a subtle displacement modifier but I didn't end up doing it here. Maybe later.
Also they're colored, the skin has a gradient I think and everything else ended up with dark purple, I think it does a good job at separating the organic elements from the clothes.

Shader-wise some parts ended up pretty lazy, but I spent most of the time on hair and shirt shaders.
The socks I spent a while on to create the highlight (that I don't find necessary anymore xD) and the shoes ended up getting a delicate noise pattern that I never added anywhere else.
I thought it would look less fake but I couldn't get it to look exactly like a paintbrush stroke, so I didn't put it anywhere else.

The hair has a gradient controlled with an empty positioned close to the head. Where the empty is, hair is brighter and further away from it it gets darker.
I have another empty to replicate an awesome effect I noticed in Kawatsuri 's work, the hair around the face having a bit of skin tone color mixed in.
It's a cool way to make the transition softer and to imitate the light bouncing of from the face and lighting up the hair. All in all I love it so much, such a cool look <3
So another empty controls that and then there are highlights. I've been using matcaps a lot for highlights both here and in the animation.
I think I'm going to share them later because they're really fun for this non photorealistic style. I think that's it for the hair!

The shirt and other clothes are my typical 2d shader, principled BSDF converted to rgb and then the colors are chosen in the color ramp node.
I made the shadow get darker towards the light and become brighter and more violet the further away it is.
It's something I did for the other characters too, sometimes it's a challenge to work with in darker conditions but overall I really like the look. It works well when there are strong lights involved.
Skin was the last thing and I have yet to find time to learn normal editing properly. So I simply used vertex colors to define areas of permanent shadow and made the face single color to avoid unattractive shading.
The eyes are looking really sad as I didn't really find the time to work on them, so I'll keep quiet about them ^^"
And I think that's everything I have to share for the process c:
