Kalere is young optimist, constantly looking for the next big thing to explore. She's very excited about new places and things. She is the type to ask why constantly, never accepting simple answers or being brushed off. She is an avid believer in studying the pieces in order to understand the big picture. Always eager to learn, Kalere has a tendency to pull things apart (both figuratively and literally) to try and find out how they work. Usually she does this without thinking, putting her need to sate her curiosity before anything else. She'll dive into research or work with very little preparation. Mostly because she doesn't want the opportunity to pass her by. Because of her love for investigation, she's often thinking about several things at once. While she's generally good at juggling tasks, Kalere is prone to biting off more than she can chew. When she does take on too much, things can get a bit hectic. She's reckless, leaving projects half done or rushing in without instructions. This can often lead to things getting messy or plans getting ruined. However, more often than not she has the best intentions when she begins something. She wants to do/make things that are well crafted, that are useful. She's a genuinely sweet young woman. Despite her rash decision making, she is generally very polite and considerate in social situations. Sometimes she speaks her mind more than she should, but her words rarely carry any venom. When it comes to authority or those she respects, she usually does as she's told. However she is also very driven, and while willing to follow rules, she is also very very willing to bend them.
History:
Eighteen years ago Kalere's parents died. They were a humble farming couple on their way to the capital, hoping for a better life in the city. They had nothing to their name. Not a title or land or family wealth. All they had was what they could fit in their carriage and a week old newborn. They had left the safety and comfort of their home behind to try and start a small shop. There they could raise their child and be content. Unfortunately for them, highwaymen care little for the situation of the people they intend to rob. They were stopped by arrows and gunfire. The small coach was surrounded by ragged criminals in the middle of nowhere. As they cowered in fear, they watched the only valuables they had being taken. Faced with the dilemma of being left with nothing, they tried to hide what they could from their attackers. They were spotted, and in the struggle the couple were unintentionally killed.
Finding that punishment for murder and robbery was not nearly worth the sentimental, and frankly worthless, trinkets they had found, the highwaymen fled the scene. If they heard the cries of the infant left behind, they ignored them. She was left alone in the wreckage, screaming in her mother’s arms. Fortunately for the child, another group of travelers came down the path a few hours later. They rescued the baby girl, gathering anything that was left, which was no more than a few soiled books and broken glass glass from the wares they had hoped to sell. She was taken to Koben, as her parents had intended, and left in the care of an orphanage. There she spent the first few years of her life.
The orphanage was full of rowdy children, mischievous rascals the kind hearted workers were trying to reform into respectable citizens of the Empire. Either by luck or misfortune, a pair of clever young half-elves took a liking to the infant the moment she was brought in. The older girl was charged with taking care of her, and since the boy never left his companion’s side, they quickly formed an inseparable trio. With the growing toddler strapped to their backs, they’d sneak out of the orphanage and explore the city. They were mostly harmless if not a bit irritating to mild mannered citizens they pickpocketed and pranked. More often than not, they would be spotted and chased back into the orphanage, only to wreak childish havoc again the next day. If they were lucky, the one to catch them would be an old battle worn Tusar guard. She would scold them, pinching their cheeks and dragging them by the ears out of trouble.
Eventually this wary guard caught the children enough that she began to ask them questions, one of them being “What parents let their offspring run such a muck?” To which her older siblings looked at eachother before answering. “Ones that don’t exist.” The woman quieted at that, sending them on their way with what seemed to be gentler eyes.
The next day they were woken and told they would be leaving. The woman had made arrangements to take them in, claiming she had plenty of room in her home. While the older two were suspicious at first, Kalere was still young and accepting of change. She took to their new home nicely. The woman was stern with them, but also treated them as her own. She made sure the older two went to school, despite their protests, and set upon teaching Kalere all the things any toddler in Korben should learn. Not much for scholastics herself, the Tusar woman let the young girl go through what books she had. Most of them were military literature. Historical accounts and stratagem. The young girl of course took no interest in those. What she did find fascinating were the engineering manuals and weapon logs. The drawings of machinery and metal were more than enough to dazzle the child.
Much to her new mother’s chagrin, this also led to her beginning to take things in the house apart to see if they were just as remarkable on the inside as she saw in pictures. This curiosity only grew as she got older. Her mother encouraged her passion, as long as she didn’t burn down the house or break the plumbing. She studied hard in school, taking in the knowledge of machinery quite easily, but her love always lied with simple things. She had always admired the perfectly crafted swords and armor her mother dawned before her retirement. She would run her fingers across the seamless metal, delighted by the mastery it must have taken to make such smooth, sleek shapes. When she finished school, Kalere contemplated joining the military for the opportunity to further learn smithing. However, her mother was not fond of the idea. She wanted her youngest far away from all of the shrapnel and gunfire of war. So, the woman contacted some old friends in Tusa and arranged for Kalere to learn the craft there. While the city was far from the safest place in the empire, at least her mother knew it well and could make sure the girl had more friends than foes. The girl happily complied, wanting adventure and travel.
So with her brother as her guardian, Kalere set off to the desert city to begin her apprenticeship.
Additional Info:
- Her pendant is a piece of stained glass from what was left of her deceased parent's caravan. It used to be quite jagged and sharp, but her mother carefully carved it into a crude teardrop shape for her.
- Speaks Common, but still trying to learn Vikasa. Her pronunciation is still pretty shaky.
- She and her siblings all share similar tattoos on their wrists meant to represent their bond despite not being blood related. (Really it was just a bunch of dumb youngsters thinking it would be cool)
- She sends her mother letters quite often. Sometimes she sends trinkets or drawings of new things she's found.
- Kalere sometimes works on small mechanisms as a hobby, still studying a bit on technology in her spare time.
- Though very passionate about weaponry and metalwork, Kalere has very little experience with a sword. Her mother trained her a bit, but if given a choice, she prefers her fists or a small weapon in a fight.
- Deeply insulted if anyone refers to her mother and siblings as anything other than her true family. (ie "adopted mother" "adopted brother" etc.)
- The orphanage gave her the name "Christiana", but this was thankfully changes after her adoption.
Relationships:
Chasiku Menza (Mother):
Originally from Tusa, Chasiku is a recently retired Koben guard who took Kalere and her siblings in when the girl was four. The woman is strict and painfully honest, but has always supported and encouraged her children.
Camellia (Lee) Menza (Older Sister):
You're typical bossy older sister. Lee is a half-elf of dark elf descent with a tendency to nag Kalere for her recklessness. A former troublemaker and slight anarchist, Lee was somewhat rehabilitated after their adoption, though she is still quite a handful and not to be messed with. Lee is married and lives in Koben with her husband and their mother. Kalere admires and respects her sister despite their habit of "disagreeing"
Nabi Menza (Brother):
Kalere's eccentric half-elf brother (Wood elf descent). He grew up in Song-lu and ended up in a Koben orphanage at the age of eleven, but he won't tell her any more than that. He keeps a lot of weird plants and elixirs in their current home, which Kalere complains about often. However, she loves him dearly and they are quite protective of each other.
Rp Preference:
Skype || Notes || Google Docs
- Feel free to leave a comment here if you are interested in rping. You can also send me a note, but I may not see it, or forget about it.
- I like getting to know people a bit before rping, so if you want to talk for a bit before we rp it's always welcome.
- Headcanoning, or just discuss how our characters would interact is also welcome, however, I'd still like to rp with and/or get to know you before I talk about our characters. I won't auto ship my character with anyone or jump into any sort of relationship (whether it be friends, enemies, lovers, etc.) without some development.
