Familiarity makes people sloppy, the amount of times a old hat spills acid is more than someone who is just handed it, unless that person drops it. The new person is more cognizant of the danger that the acid poises. The experienced one may know how to handle it, but the newbie is the one most aware of the risks.

It's why you stay to program, and not poke things that you are not qualified to poke. But I hope that the labs have good safeguards. God knows that you need them always. The amount of times someone's dropped a vial of mysterious clear liquid and the entire lab has to go through a clean and envac run is annoying.
