Description
The greatest internet cartoon ever.HOMESTAR RUNNER is a long-running internet series created by Mike and Matt Chapman in 2000. The series revolved around two interesting individuals - the titular Homestar, an idiotic but lovable athlete of sorts, and Strong Bad, the masked troublemaker who always wants to outwit Homestar in various ways.
It was 2003 - I was still in elementary school...one day, my next door neighbor told me about this crazy site and soon these images starting forming in my head - the main hero was a white guy with no arms? What was this insanity?! So eventually I visited the site....and I was an immediate fan. While my neighbor eventually lost interest in the site, I would go on to watch every new cartoon and play every new game for the next several years. Even back then, when I didn't get all the jokes and sly references to modern pop culture, I was always open to new cartoons, and this one caught my attention. While the animation is nothing special, the ingenious writing and random wordplay makes up for it. And when you do get the references they throw at you, the show can be funny...REALLY funny. I think what made it work was that the creators had no stuck-up executives supervising their work and editing out anything inappropriate - it was just the two brothers and the occasional collaborator. These guys could do whatever they want, and they never ran out of steam. This was a show that managed to get better and better as the years progressed.
But sadly, things changed. Around 2009, when I was nearing the end of high school, updates to the site were becoming less and less frequent. No cartoons, no games, nothing. After high school, there were a couple of new cartoons here and there, but then 2010 hit, and since then, the site hasn't put anything new. From what I hear, the creators of the show have gone on to work for children's television, including Nick Jr's YO GABBA GABBA, Disney's GRAVITY FALLS, and so on. There was talk of a new update to the site...several years ago, but nothing since then.
While the return of this great cartoon seems highly unlikely now, I can still safely say that HOMESTAR RUNNER is a major influence for me, for it's non-sequitur humour and wordplay. This is one of the few cartoons from my childhood that I can go back to and still laugh at.
Seriously.
EDIT: I just found out that HOMESTAR RUNNER has finally been updated with a new cartoon! And yes, it was pure genius, it's like the Brothers Chaps never left! This could possibly be the greatest April Fool's Day of all time. Let's hope we get some more cartoons in the future!

I like the old toon-style look going on here. You even replicated the quality too!
If i did a cartoon, I would sure as hell make it look like the older cel-shaded toons.

I usually can't stand Homestar Fan Art because nobody can do it right, but I rather enjoy this piece. *Sips from tea with gentleman's mustache*

I can see why you'd be confused if someone were trying to describe what some of the characters look like...

I guess I must have missed something in my brain, because this series always passed me like a stone. Maybe it was the designs, or I wasn't very trusting of web cartoons at the time, but I could never get into it after trying a few times.
Having said all that, I do recall the zonked out style and see that you did a nice relative closer homage to their looks here (maybe it's just that they're already crazies up as is! ). Great job no matter the opinion.

As a huge fan of the classic Homestar Runner series, I approve of this.
It was sad to see the show fade away into nothingness. Very sad.

I miss Homestar Runner. It was one of my favorite cartoons from the days, and I still hope for the day that it'll come back in some way or form (Homestar and Strong Bad did make a cameo appearance last year at W00tstock which could possibly mean something).

i think this series is what helped keep my sanity intact during my high school days. i always needed a good laugh every now and then, and i had a fellow classmate to thank for introducing me to it. as for the characters, it was nice to see how oddball in personality they were, and unique in their own way for some tongue-in-cheek humor. your take on the character designs are more than awesome, i especially love the gruff expression on strong bad! xD

I learned about this web series thanks to my good ol' brother. I love it for a lot of those same reasons, and I consider it a big influence as well. Another cool thing about it was that it satirized our world while creating its own surreal one. And yeah, it's a shame that they haven't been getting around to it since 2009. It's not that I'm against the Chapman Bros. getting work on more mainstream material, but it really makes me wish they would be able to get around to updating a little more.
Awesome recreation of them, man.

Such an absolute masterpiece made in flash. Of course everyone knows that Strong Bad is truly the main star. And I still hope and wait for that rumored new SB Email.

I first saw Homestar in elementary school as well and would spend hours and hours every day on the site watching the videos over and over again with my brother. Was a great cartoon and it sucks that it got canned.
Great picture too btw, was great seeing this on the front page!
