just curious, have you tried installing the nvidia drivers in mint 17 ? if so, how did it go? all of the version of mint i've tried have had trouble doing this. (14/15/16)

Yeah although it's not installed automatically it shows the 331.38-0ubuntu7 as recommended and that't what I installed.
I haven't encountered any problems personally.

Yeah, it's in the driver manager. There is the open source driver, some legacy nvidia drivers, and two more current drivers.
