Description
A common motif in my work, especially with the concept of alternate universes is that things will be 'similar, yet different'. Be prepared to see a person who you think may be you, but you may share absolutely nothing in common. Be ready for a little shock as you stare at a world that you may think was yours but is not.You might have never been born here. Perhaps you went into another line of work. Perhaps you were a really nice guy in your world, yet a jerk in another. Perhaps history took a turn none of us could have foreseen. We're all playing the same game of life, but the rules might be different.
This scene is in Sally's Journal when a UNSC team led by 1MEF Major Oscar Beller crosses dimensions into the Prime Universe to answer a distress call. The Primes need the Humans and the Neos, but why? Wouldn't it make sense for them to go after the problem themselves? Why would they want people who fight with tactics they not only disagree with, but resent? Why would the Primes think that a group of Marines can succeed where the Freedom Fighters couldn't?
You'll have to excuse me - not much experience drawing on-model characters. The stylistic differences are very much intentional, and the physical difference between Primes and the UNSC (Mobius included) is very much acknowledged.

Mainly focuses on a more humanized version of the Mobius world. Specifically around Sally Acorn and her realm. In my UA, Sonic dosent exist as such (or if he does hes almost forgotten) and is set when Sally is around 32 years old.
Currently nearly finished the first novel of a trilogy if your interested in reading its here [link]

Hmm. Looks like we do have a similar concept. In my universe, Sonic does exist, but focus is taken off of him and more on the universe in general. It's not even referred to as a Sonic Universe, but instead, Neo Mobius (out of universe name). Currently, the characters are in their mid twenties, and they are in a military scenario, but I think it best explains how they get to locations first and have the best equipment... not to mention the only technology that can cross universes. I do make... unorthodox changes, but I stand by them.
I'll give that book a quick read, and thanks!

I'm a little confused. So, the Sally who is the main character in your stories the Prime Sally or a parallel one?

That would be the one on the right. The Primes are NOT the main characters in my line of work, rather they are seen as parallels who the more humanoid Mobians (Whom I refer to as 'Neos' because it's a new personal design) compare themselves to over the course of the stories.

Ah, I see. You know that's actually pretty clever how your Sally is a parallel version as compared to many stories where the main characters are almost always the Prime ones.

I did that for a number of reasons: The presence of an alternate universe allows me to work with elements that I would have never got before. Many events that occur in this timeline would not be able to coexist with those in the Archie storyline. Placing them in an alternate universe allows me to explore different events, and indeed allows me to explore more of the planet and create my own storylines. An alternate universe allows me to also explore themes that are not commonly used in the Archie canon either. As a design rule, this version of Mobius has a different origin, darker themes, vast detail that the comics never cover in geographic and cultural perspectives, and with older characters, they find themselves in more believable positions and situations.
The beautiful part of mixing the parallel universe with the Prime is that it creates existentialism in the parallel characters, since the existence of the Prime, alleged 'supreme' universe makes them feel inferior and sows distrust and resentfulness towards their shorter and cartoonish brethren, and the Humans are even more thrown in the mix (first contact between the two is before the discovery of Station Square), since they don't know whether or not the fact Earth as we know it still exists makes them inferior.
Lastly, the alternate universe is an attempt for me to distinguish myself from other authors, since I use a personal canon, persistent timeline and a vast universe which in fact covers two universes (Earth & Mobius), more mature themed, and brimming with issues and messages that I want to reach out to the reader.
And this is all just a training phase for me.

Well, if you're going to deviate a lot from the formula, I don't see what's wrong with that! I mean, if your story fits in with the canon timeline, you can do that too. I just made my an AU simply because so much was different it was practically begging for it.

You don't understand. It's not that simple. This is a snapshot of a very complex story that was detailed with full text, character involvement and plot relevance. If it was simple as saying 'yeah, this is an alternate universe', then I would say that, but I can't because there's a whole backstory behind it.

It's quite alright. It's clear that a person who sees this for the first time wouldn't be sure what to make of it. This is just an illustration of an event that is occurring, kind of like in a picture book that is accompanied by text. I feel that it makes a scene more rich to include it.

It's called Sally's Journal. It's meant to convey what's going on between the other stories I write. That's five years of in-universe time I'm attempting to cover, and I've currently covered six months. The adventures in the Prime universe are the first entries in the year 3235.

Hmm... well, the journals are planned to end sometime around the year 3239 in-universe. I still have plenty of time to explore other universes as well, be they created by Archie, fan universes, or possibly something else altogether, as a character from Star Trek made a brief appearance in a short story, a story that spans two years in the Star Wars Universe, and an invasion from another game universe will all occur. As far as I'm concerned, anything's fair game as long as I play the cards right.
Take your time with your friend. I'm not going anywhere!

Oh, I see. So, you don't make up any universes yourself? Or do you do, but just explore other universes to study them? As for fan-universes, do you ever have a hard time exploring them? Sometimes they make common mistakes, and make them not clear as wish them to be. And I'm glad you're doing this, because it will make your story much more interesting. I can't imagine how much stories you read a day, but i can tell you've become a very great writer because of this. Bless you, and your fans. Perhaps you can teach me about different universes and different time periods?

Chris000 In reply to SallyAcorn22 [2012-06-22 18:22:30 +0000 UTC]
Actually, I have made up an original universe that I was hoping to expand upon. It has no connection whatsoever to the Sonic or Halo universe although there are influences that have come with my work in writing over the years. In a short story I wrote a while ago, the characters were noting just how different that universes could be. Let's see if I can get you a quote.
"Ah, the Aquatic Existence... The universe you are currently looking at is known as the Aquatic Expanse, an entire universe with an different set of physics, totally unlike the universe we are currently standing within. As you may have guessed, the Aquatic Expanse is a universe where empty space is replaced by water. Planets, nebulae, even stars exist in a state of liquid."
"How's this for a roadtrip? "This is a very peculiar one, I must admit. We in the Continuum call this one the 'Macroverse'. Subatomic particles such as protons and neutrons are the size of what you would think of as basketballs, constantly colliding with one another. It's a constant war and only a few civilizations were fortunate enough to evolve. How absolutely fascinating."
So more of a scientific edge rather than actual characters. Actually, I haven't had very many noteworthy fanverses for a could of reasons - the first is that a little ditty called Sturgeon's Law applies, and the second thing is that I would need to ask permission to use the author's universe, even if it was a crossover, otherwise I would be infringing on the author's material, which is frowned upon on DA. Rather, I can include material that fans can think up sometimes. When someone reads my work and suggests something that they feel would contribute to the universe, I can include them. Granted though, sometimes I need to include them in supplementary or sidestories such as the Journals, or even small one-shots that give different views to situations. Recently I am considering an idea that a Human character loses is wife due to a racial hate crime and will become a vigilante, Batman style. I don't remember who said that, but I would give them full credit if it ever came to fruition.
I would be more than happy to teach you anything that you would like to know. What's on your mind?

Ah, I see. And I understand about the fan universes, but have you ever read about one that has inspired you or even gave you an idea for a story? I remember I read a fan-fiction that this author had posted one day, and it inspired me to write one of my own. I didn't take/use any of her ideas in her own story, in fact all my ideas were very original. But did you ever read a fan universe that made you feel that way? And I like what you do with your journals; that you give different views to situations. In some stories that I've read, the author sometimes has several different characters as narrators and they have several different opinions, all directed to the same conflict. Would it be harder to do that in your stories? Or is simple that several characters have different opinions on one universe?
I would like to know more about parallel universes, as in several universes that are parallel to each other. In my case, 3. I'm doing a story, in which they involve "3 heavens". The first heaven is what we know as the sky. The second is outer space. And the third is, as you know from biblical references, heaven itself. Is it possible, or rather can I include (b/c this story is fictional), that because these three universes are parallel, that they are easy to travel to and from?
Another question: Say a 15 year boy comes from the past, to the future and meets and 18 year old man. Is the boy older? (I have always been confused with these kinds of things. Time travel is not my best thing)

Chris000 In reply to SallyAcorn22 [2012-06-23 05:31:56 +0000 UTC]
I have read a couple of stories that gave me ideas, and I even looked for a few that could serve more as guidelines; you know, what to do and what not to do. Unfortunately this was a bit difficult as my chosen crossover was extremely rare in the fanfic community, even more so since very few of the actual main characters of one made it into the other. I have been inspired by some, been made jealous by others, among many other things. The main thing is that I can be inspired by a fan universe if it is persistent. You know what I mean? A series of stories that takes place in the same continuity, which is hard to find on DeviantART. If I could find more stories that exist in a line like this, I would gladly read them and see what the author's up to. Hell, I'd even give my opinions and constructive criticism. A little help goes a long way.
Thank you for the comment about the Journals. Sally is considered the Mobian Protagonist in the series. I don't think she gets enough exposure in comparison to the Humans. This Journal is meant to balance that exposure and get people to see what she sees and thinks. It also puts the reader into an interesting position since they now know that Sally is thinking certain things when it appeared that she was just standing around navel-gazing. It makes her special character more unique and separate from the comic version, which is my goal.
Now, as for your next question... would multiple narrators be hard? Well, this certainly wouldn't be easy. I generally work in third person omniscient narration, meaning that a narrator can see the character's thoughts and convey them. This would be first person limited narration, in which characters can only work with their own thoughts. I think the closest I could explain would be in some chapters, other characters borrow the journal and use it to document their journeys. The Journal has jumped three characters so far. If we're talking at the same time? It's possible, but I would need to think about it for a while.
Well, parallel universes, if they do exist as theoretically stated, are separated by our own dimensional barriers, and by conventional means, we can't break that barrier. To tunnel into another state of existence would need some extra powerful form of technology. Now, you seem to be working in certain tiers of heaven. The first and second dimensions, the sky and space respectively, can be reached fairly easy with basic tech. If this is more of a swords and sorcery story, one can still reach the sky, but space would need some magic. The only monkey wrench is the third dimension, which is biblical heaven. This is the hardest one to answer since nobody can really answer what or where heaven is. Some don't consider heaven to be a place rather than a state of being, which makes the concept even more bizarre to quantify or put on paper. The only way that some people say to reach it is through death. Not a very easy way mind you as you only get one shot to the best of my knowledge. Unless you're a Buddhist or something. So there you have it. Depending on the physical location, the technology or magical level of your story, and generally your own rules, you can reach certain dimensions through certain means. Remember: as the author, you can say what goes on in your story. You can choose to be very scientific and have a pseudo-realistic way of reaching places through a jumpgate or go the magical way by creating a portal in which one can side-step realities. The choice is ultimately yours.
Next question: Well if we consider that the man is in fact the boy, then technically yes. This assumes that there is a causality loop (meaning that the boy travels into the future, meets himself, goes back, grows up, and meets his younger self. Repeat the young boy scenario) going on. Both characters are the boy, which means that when the two versions are in the same place, they are BOTH 15 and 18 at the same time. Time travel isn't easy to work with and a lot of people assume that it is really straightforward. I haven't done any explicit time travel in my work, but I don't know if I ever will, considering the complexity of the field. That's not to say that I don't know a thing or two on this theoretical topic.

"Calling in Marines means you're asking for extreme and focused violence to be directed onto a single, highly unfortunate, objective that you can't handle through less aggressive means." I'll go one step further and say that Freedom Fighters probably don't even believe in there being 'acceptable' casualties in a fight. They might be 'warriors' in the loosest definition of the term, but I'd say they're more on the level of Saboteurs who take down the Doc's forces on the inside. Considering that most have a superpower of sort compared to the Marines, a flawless engagement is a very possible outcome in most situations. There are also those pesky rings that won't let you die if you have one.

Swatbots don't even understand the concept of cover.

Frankly the Marines could easily come in with enough firepower to squash the Doc and his toys so bad they'd have the war over in a week tops. They took on a Xeno empire with superior technology and made them pay every victory in an ocean of their own blood until one of their supersoldiers turned the tide at the last hour when their homeworld was invaded.
Doc by comparison is little more than an arrogant bully beating up on a smaller-on-average species who can't even come up with firearms for their fighters to go up against armed and armored (if gimmicky) robots, and they're doing a damn fine job considering. Heck, UNSC could end it by issuing the FF's Magnum pistols for the little bots, rocket launchers for the big ones, and a sniper rifle for Doc himself.
