I get the sense that this being was once human, but life beat them down so hard that they became something else entirely. It isn't evil, but it isn't good either. It's lonely, and resentful of the happiness of others. It wants to die, but it can't, and must exist without the comfort and warmth of companionship for the foreseeable future.

What more can be said? Except this rings in echo for me of a time I once felt an emptiness that made even the most fantastic and wonderful successes seem like a bleak hell dooming me to pain.
