Description Youth Rates Protest, Britomart, Auckland CBD. August 2007.

Protesting for the end to youth rates. Under NZ law if you're between 16 and 17 you employer is legally entitled to pay you less than an 18 year old.

(begin monologue)
It's argued that this is because younger workers have less skills, but it's kind of odd that at on your 18th birthday suddenly you're worth $2 more than the day before, yet you gained no additional skills. The law has now been changed to state that for the first 200 hours of your employment, you're to be paid 20% less than your adult peers. I still don't think this is acceptable, does this mean that you only have to do 80% of the work? If a 30 year old enters a new industry with no skills in that industry should they be paid only 80% of the wage to reflect their lack of skill until they've been there for 3 months? Shouldn't the same employment rights and protections be given to everyone regardless of age?
(/end monologue)

Ilford Delta 400 Pro.
Braun Gloria.
Scanned 6x6inch print.

Update:
Now offering prints on this image self printed/developed Gelatin Silver gloss prints, in 6x6 and up, perhaps up to 12x12 inch on heavy weight archival paper mounted on acid free board, individually signed and numbered by myself. These will be a limited run only and shipped personally.

I might offer prints through DeviantArts print system, but a digital reprint of a silver based photo will never come close to the purity from a enlarged copy of the original negative. (feel free to disagree but I do believe it is better on so many levels and will last much longer than most digital inks).

Wow this is real strong, good shot and lighting.

Do you mind if I use this? I do flyers for a small punk venue and I could really use this.

When I put them on here I'll credit you if I use the picture. Oh and well done for fighting the fash!

Hey thanks for your comment
I'm going to have to say no to using this picture for fliers, ... but there's some other stuff I have on here that I might be open to you using. This one I'm just personally attached to.
Check out one called Punks Not Dead, It just smells bad.

Ah that's a shame, it's only a little pub and that was just what I was looking for, I could put your credit on the flier? The flier probably wont get printed, they just go on a myspace album of upcoming gigs. Thanks anyway, let me know if anything similiar crops up :]

I like this.
The youth rates epidemic or whatever reminds me of the simple fact, you have to be 21 to drink and 18 to join the army.
Which has NOTHING to do with the monologue at hand, and NOTHING to do with the New Zeland government.
Just something I noticed.
But hey, the American government has it's share of corruptions.
Starting with C. Rice.
HA.

I love this, very powerful image! Black and white completely works for this photo. Your eyes move across those huge flags(?), then get hooked onto that dude's sweet jacket!

I really like the drive behind the protest, as well, and completely support that.

Just wondering, since this was posted almost a year ago, has anything changed with those laws since then?

Haha thanks, I think the only thing that needs changing is that it is a little over exposed in some places, I suppose I could go back to the original negative and fix it, but it really is beyond my will to do so, and I feel that it gives the photo a more dreamy or surreal look to it. Thanks again!

hmm...this law seems to be pure s**t. here in Italy we got a sistem called "precariato", meaning that your contract must be renoved every 6, or even 3 month...so you'll never know if you'll have your job again or not. usually when you begin to be too old or too...how to say..."expensive" they fire you. that's italian's world of job for young people. (sorry for my bad english, anyway)

this picture in great

chriscrossxyz In reply to HatePeopleLikeYou [2008-02-14 21:49:45 +0000 UTC]

So you have no job security? We're pretty lucky here, you cannot be fired without a valid reason, and if you believe that you have been unfairly dismissed you can take the boss to a special court where the judge can make the boss pay you your normal pay for a set time so you can find a new job. It's also illegal to employ people without a proper contract to protect their job.

Thanks for your comment

whoa! i wish i'd live there in NZ! seems pretty good. we got a special article in our contracts (article number 18 if i remember well) that should protect workers from exploitation and unfair firing, last government tried to erase it but failed (you know people answered with demonstrations, occupations, strikes and so on). we still have our article, but there is a law "legge biagi" that autorizes the employment of these f$£&£"&ing 3 months and 6 months contract, expecially for young people. in italy we have no politic now, we got just mafia -.-'

you're welcome anyway

and sorry for my english, again

Even though I'm over here in the States, and have no idea about the wage system over in NZ, the picture itself sends a message that immedietly caught my eye. It reminds me of my brother, rebellion, and the line, "rebel without a cause"
I believe my brother would like something like this, but alas, college tends to eat up alot of my money. But maybe in the future.
Great shot.

I was actually at work this day, in the building across the road from Britomart, I went downstairs to get lunch and saw these guys setting up down there, luckily that day I had my camera with me, got a few shots and then went and bought another roll of b/w film. Glad I did in the end I'll get back to you about the print soon.

Thanks!

Not sure how freedom and equality is a stupid idea... maybe it's just the route to that which is difficult? Thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Synthesise In reply to chriscrossxyz [2008-02-01 14:07:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm just going to jump in here.

Anarchy would not result in equality. A bunch of my friends think they're little anarchists, but lets face the facts here people, anarchy would eat most of us alive. Without law and government, who would really take over? Established gangs. And they don't give a damn about little white punks do they?

I'd vote for freedom and equality any day. Laws aren't meant to detract from this, but moderate it.
