Description Youth Rates Protest, Britomart, Auckland CBD. August 2007.

Protesting for the end to youth rates. Under NZ law if you're between 16 and 17 you employer is legally entitled to pay you less than an 18 year old.

(begin monologue)
It's argued that this is because younger workers have less skills, but it's kind of odd that at on your 18th birthday suddenly you're worth $2 more than the day before, yet you gained no additional skills. The law has now been changed to state that for the first 200 hours of your employment, you're to be paid 20% less than your adult peers. I still don't think this is acceptable, does this mean that you only have to do 80% of the work? If a 30 year old enters a new industry with no skills in that industry should they be paid only 80% of the wage to reflect their lack of skill until they've been there for 3 months? Shouldn't the same employment rights and protections be given to everyone regardless of age?
(/end monologue)

Ilford Delta 400 Pro.

Scanned 6x6inch print.

Update:
Now offering prints on this image self printed/developed Gelatin Silver gloss prints, in 6x6 and up, perhaps up to 12x12 inch on heavy weight archival paper mounted on acid free board, individually signed and numbered by myself. These will be a limited run only and shipped personally.

I might offer prints through DeviantArts print system, but a digital reprint of a silver based photo will never come close to the purity from a enlarged copy of the original negative. (feel free to disagree but I do believe it is better on so many levels and will last much longer than most digital inks).

I agree, I think freedom and equality can only result when people are educated and there is a free exchange in information and skill. Absolute freedom in mass groups is dangerous, for the reason you said... pretty much just gang warfare. But if a large number of people in the population were well educated I don't think there'd be that kind of problem.

And as for laws, there should still be laws in an anarchist society, but they should be laws which everyone can agree on and set by everyone to effect everyone. Politicians like to make people believe that they speak for the working class, or the lower classes, but they're not working class, they're usually well educated, well paid, business owners or investors. As such they set rules which keep them comfortable. Governments don't like taxing business, raising minimum wages or enact laws which might damage business because investors just ship off to somewhere like China where they can get their labour at a much cheaper rate. That's probably fair enough (people want things at the lowest possible price), and business means more jobs for everyone (which is what the working class cares about at the end of it all), but I don't think that should be at the expense of dignity and treatment of each other.

In relation to minimum wage, the wage should be set at a liveable wage. You shouldn't be comfortable, but you should be able to survive, currently I don't think it is at that level.

If the responsibility of power and education of politics was universal, I don't think we'd have as many problems, we'd still have them, but I think their impacts would be a lot less and more isolated.

Anyway, its 5am, got work at 9... should catch some sleep... I don't actually know if the above makes a whole lot of sense or says what I actually believe, but ... I'll get back to you on it

But just an aside about the little white punks, I didn't get into far-left politics through punk rock, it was the other way around. I used to listen to techno, dance and other electro type stuff, then I got into some fruity commie stuff and started hanging out with those kinds of people off discussion forums and some guy gave me his boots, so here we are...

What about human greed. The want for power. You'd think logic would prevail in these circumstances but I've come to find it really comes down to a persons own desires and tastes; each wants their own way. And for this reason people will always fight for power. There isn't a place for meeting people half way so much of the time. ... If that made sense at all, which I don't think it did.

Which laws will everyone agree on. How would they be enforced and monitored. What would the consequence for breaking a law be. If the majority of the public were well educated, we could easily manipulate the existing government into making the changes we think would benefit us.

I think wages at the moment, are still pretty damned poor. Some outrageous percentage of NZers will not ever be able to afford there own homes. I think that's shocking. Yeah, we need to make changes, but this can only come in time. I don't know.

Yeah I'm pretty lost for words, but you've made a good case and I agree for the most part. Thanks for the comment back. ;D

I can make you one? haha, anarchy patches are a tad silly though, I'd rather have a band patch

(they're silly because 90% of the time the wearer isn't an anarchist at all).

Ilford! Someone from them is coming to our uni to give a 'masterclass'
Btw I agree with what you say - over here theirs tiered wages where under 18 earn less etc.

chriscrossxyz In reply to Huomenna [2007-10-25 13:22:29 +0000 UTC]

I've got a few 40foot rolls of ilford in the dark room.... probably way past expiry date though... haha. Are they teaching you dark room chemistry?

Mmm they've changed it now, so instead of there being a 'youth wage' they have a 'new workers wage' so anyone who is starting their first job, the first 300 hours is paid at a lower rate. Given that those working as teenagers are only going to be working a few hours a week, that means it might take them up to a year or two to do the 300 hours, so essentially nothing has changed.

Yup, we made our own negatives a couple of weeks ago and now we're on to printing in the dark room. Because there's quite alot of us my friend Louise and I often go and find something else to do then go and do the printing when they've all gone for lunch, our tutor Michael doesn't seem to mind and we have more fun when we're on our own anyway.

Mmm you should, people will say shit like "but you can't change anything, you're just pissing and moaning", last week McDonald's in New Zealand said by March next year they'll stop youth wages and pay everyone a minimum $12 an hour.

Sometimes I might get one or two which are ok, so I've got to decide if those two images were worth the $30 I paid for them? I'm looking at getting chems and go back to home developing. But since I'm moving out soon it might be a waste of time. Should I go with a general purpose developer/fix or get something specific for the film I'm using? I hate making ultimate decisions like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

castintheshadows In reply to chriscrossxyz [2007-09-09 10:14:37 +0000 UTC]

if you get something generic, then it doesn't matter if you switch types of films, or if you decide to do one film to have a contrasting effect if you do a series or something. Or you could always get something specific for the film, and get a small quantity of some generic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chriscrossxyz In reply to castintheshadows [2007-09-09 10:18:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah you can get something like Ilford, which has a range of fairly general purpose developer/fixer, but then you can also get specialised Kodak T-Max developers, I have a few rolls of T-Max but not enough to justify buying a 500ml bottle of dev/fix. I'm wanting probably to look at powderized one-shot developers, because I have a habit of leaving stuff half used. The last two films I developed myself I nuked them with bung developer. Put the developer in, and when I tipped the developer out all the emulsion came out as well.
