Description (Prints and Art Gifts available)
Colt Anaconda .44mag with an 8" factory ported barrel and HoloSite.

Drawing is about 12" wide
Royal Graphite Pencil: 2H & 5B
Kneaded Eraser, Compass, Stumps, Ruler
Time: 8 hours
Scanned drawing and adjusted brightness & contrast to match the actual drawing as best as I could. The actual drawing looks even better than this pic.

This was my most ambitious and time consuming project yet. I'm mostly happy with it. Areas I wish were better of course, but all in all, not too shabby

**EDIT 01/05/2013: I have received some feedback that the white space makes the work appear unfinished. I deliberately left the white space. I liked the contrast between the outside white space, the black border around the gun, and the shadings on the gun. IMO, it helps bring out the contrasts of light and dark within the drawing. I appreciated the feedback, but I'll leave it as is **

Still new at this drawing thing, so any and all comments/suggestions on how to improve or what I could have done differently, or what I missed, or anything at all, are welcome.

Here are the WIPs in order:

My reference photo was taken by myself and the gun is also mine:

Welcome to my rage, my bloodlust will be sated
I'm locked and loaded and ready to engage
Killing everything I've always hated
A motherfucking Van Gogh with a gun,
about to paint his masterpiece
Blow the world into oblivion
Play with the blood of the deceased!"

Really great shading job! I think it would look btter if the entire background was shaded but that's just me!

Let me start off by saying that I am far from an expert on guns, so I will be going off of your reference picture a lot for this critique, also I will state right now, that I am nitpicky and do not mean anything I say in a rude way, merely as a critique. With that said, at first look and even a while after this looks absolutely amazing, now don't get me wrong it is amazing! But the more I compare it to the reference the more small details stand out to me. Firstly, the shading was absolutely wonderfully done, but the lines are somewhat visible making the shading look a bit scratchy, I would try some blending via either one of the sticks made for that, or you could even do what I do which is just using paper towel or toilet paper to smudge it together to get rid of that line-y look. Then on to the reference, overall, and mostly in fact, this is extremely accurate to the picture and the gun itself, however some things I noticed are getting to me a bit, for example the up and down arrows. At first I thought they were screws, but then I saw the picture and noticed they were arrows, I understand it is a very small detail, the only thing really bothering me, and very minutely so, about them is the one to the right, I just think it could have been drawn a little more centered, but that's really no big deal, the other small detail is some of the writing like that near the arrows that isn't shown, but again I more than understand how that would probably be too hard to try to recreate. And lastly one fact that has been pointed out is the inconsistency of the black border, but I won't delve into that. Other than that, I think this piece is absolutely beautiful and extremely accurate, the shading and line-work are absolutely gorgeous and better than I can even do, so honestly just keep doing what you're doing because this is really good

Very nice! You've done a wonderful job on the shading in the metal--you captured the roundness of the object very well, which I know is difficult. And the lettering is excellent. I'm anything but a gun expert, but this looks very nice to me!
Critique-wise (since you have this submitted to a critique group), I agree with you on the black border/white space bringing out the contrast. But the shape of the black border is a little irregular, and I think that's what people are saying makes it look finished. If you were to do it again, I'd suggest keeping the black border a fairly uniform width, like you've done around the handle/grip and the trigger (my apologies if I'm getting the terms completely wrong--I know very little about guns). It looks like you've drawn the barrel a little bit shorter than you have it in your reference picture, though I don't know that it would have fit on the paper if you'd made it longer. And then the handle/grip thing (sorry!) is more straight up-and-down, while in the picture it's at more of an angle. The only other thing I'd suggest would be to make the plastic bit on the top (the sight?) a little bit darker, so it looks like it's actually more black than grey.Β
But anyway. Very nice work on this one--you've done an excellent job of avoiding smudges, which I always have trouble with in graphite. Keep up the good work!

fuck yeah! I love the anaconda, it was such a bad ass revolver and deserved a much longer production run than it got! this is a really good drawing of it too, that shading beautifully captures the metallic texture to it and everything looks like very neat and proportional. if there's one suggestion I have to make though it would be to make that dark border a full background; looking at the original reference photo I think having the entire background dark Β rather than the space around the gun mademade the contrast a lot more complete/consistent; I guess having a border makes it have a cool spotlight-ish aesthetic but if you want to go with that it might be a good idea to clean up the edges Β of the border a bit. as is they're kind of fuzzy and make it look a little unfinished; making a straight diving line between white and black or having a sort of even fade line would definitely help...

That's impressive. The shading on the barrel really gives it a metallic look.

Nice pistol, I almost bought one of these. It could even mount a scope. Only reason I didn't buy it was lack of funds (damn economy).

Would love to get a .357 some day. Either the Python or the Redhawk. But at the moment, I can barely afford to shoot the .44mag, lol.

Why do you think I'm glad I only have a .357? (Mostly because I don't have any reloading kit yet.)
