Description

Much can be attributed to our innate ability to control the environment. From towering cities to agricultural spaces, we seem to have mastered the ability to reclaim land.  That’s not to say we do it in the most environmentally-friendly way. In fact, many of our landscaping pursuits have degraded local ecosystems.

But -- as much as we like to think we’re in charge -- Mother Nature is the one who’s running the show.  It’s long been argued that the damage humans have inflicted on the planet is only temporary.

Some estimates say it would take approximately 500 years for nature to completely reclaim the Earth, should all humans disappear.  While 500 years may seem like a long time to us, it’s really just a blip in time.  Our planet is more than 4.5 billion years old, after all.

That said, nature has already started to reclaim some abandoned spaces –- and the end result can be hauntingly beautiful ... today i found a chair "some of you would say that i'm haunted by chairs" but today i wasnt haunted ....

Love this photo and the message.

To Earth and practically the whole Universe we are insignificant even though the religions we make like to think otherwise. I like to think that, if we destroy ourselves in some way (and given how we act it's quite possible), the planet will heal itself in due time. Photos like this are already evident enough to prove this fact.

Again, great photography work! I might be inspired now to do some of this myself!

thank you so very much Mark

but of course we are, we're just here because we are now in this small fragment of time, i'm sure we'll all vanish because of our stupidity and the earth will heal it's self because it always has done ... we've alterd mother nature, i'm sure if you look it up you find reference to the various stages of how green house gases have made mother nature take action on here own ... search it as its rather interesting

thank you once again and i hope it has and you do

Couldn't agree more, Chris. We are indeed insignificant in the grand scheme of things - even as an entire species. More is the wonder, then, that we can have such a profound effect on one another even with our least significant endeavours (like hobby photography, for instance!). Perhaps that's why we believe we matter.

PS Nice pic...

I think the moral is that importance is subjective whereas a lot of people seem to believe it's an absolute. It is entirely possible, normal in fact, to feel that people and things are important whilst we as individuals, a species, a world even, are entirely insignificant in the grand scheme of things... My dA friends and my new camera, of course, are of immense importance to the future of existence. I think!

Enough already

i guess it all comes down to perception then in the end?

maybe everything's important but its insignificance depends on a host of other elements that we automatically filter like a huge computer in the blink of an eye ....

but of course they are and i couldn't agree more with you John

I agree with Hanan: an opening image of your exhibition.
A journal could be fine! Or the use of the portfolio?
Anyway, a great picture!

my pleasure. and i am totally sincere.
you know sometimes i get bored of dA, or more simply i want to explore the "wide world outhere" and i go surfing around the web.

your image illustrates very well the contemporary approach of photography. i think you have something here that can be explored in a further deliberate way.  not insisting on the chairs (God knows you have plenty of them) but on the concept of what you analysed in your comment. different visual approaches of this concept.
the problem of dA is that it dosen't let you present your work as a whole.
i was thinking that one could present it in a journal. post them is stash, and then make a journal  called a "project"

i don't know. talking to you like i'm talking ro myself, right now.
