Julie Dawson’s life was on the downturn. She was 38, and had just recently divorced from her husband Daniel. They were high school sweethearts, and although things went well for the first ten years of marriage, Daniel was ready to have kids, but Julie was not. Tensions grew, and their relationship soon withered.

Daniel quickly remarried, but Julie struggled to get in another relationship. To top it all off, Julie played the role of a housewife when she was married, and now she couldn’t find a job, thus leading to her struggling to pay rent in the apartment she moved into after the divorce. Now, she was on her way to meet her friend Rebecca for lunch.

She walked down the city street, Julie hurried to the restaurant, as she was running late. She checked her phone, and noticed that Rebecca had sent her a message asking where she was. Julie was about to reply, when she walked right into something. Or someone. She looked up, and saw that two men, one a white man with long, flowing white hair, and the other a bald black man. Both were wearing sunglasses and were dressed in suits.

“Oh, sorry, m’am. We weren’t watching where we were going.” said one man.

“It’s okay, neither was I...”she trailed. The two men were both staring at her, looking at her up and down.

“Miss, would you be interested in receiving a large amount of money?” one asked. “I...yes. How much money are we talking about here?” Julie asked.

“500 thousand dollars.” the two replied bluntly. “Wait, what? What’s the catch?” she asked, bewildered that they were offering that much.

“We can’t give you the details here, but we can meet with you later to discuss further details.” said the bald man. “And where will this meeting take place?” Julie asked.

The long-haired man took out a piece of paper. “Here.” he said, handing it to her. “We’ll talk to you soon, Ms Dawson.” the bald man said, as he and the other man walked away.

“Ms Dawson? How did he know my name?” she thought out loud. Trying to forget it, she continued on her way to the restaurant.

Julie walked inside the restaurant and spotted Rebecca at a nearby booth. She walked over and took a seat. “Hey, Julie! What took you so long?” Rebecca asked.

Rebecca was 35 and married, with three kids, one was three years old, another was seven, and the eldest child was twelve. Her brown hair matched Julie’s, but her big brown eyes were a drastic difference compared to Julie’s baby blues.

“I...it’s a long story...” Julie replied. “Well I have time!” Rebecca smiled. “I was stopped by these two really serious-looking guys in the middle of the street. And they offered me 500 THOUSAND DOLLARS.” Julie said. “Half a million dollars? For what?” Rebecca asked, her eyes widening.

“I have no idea. I’m meeting with them after this to find out more. I know it’s suspicious, but I NEED that money...” Julie sighed. “Of course, just be careful, Julie. You don’t know who these guys are, like you said.” Rebecca said, giving Julie her blessing.

“So, Julie, I have some news of my own, but I doubt it’ll top yours...” Rebecca laughed. “What is it?” Julie asked, curious. “Mike and I are trying to have another baby.” she smiled. “Oh, really? That’s great, Becky!” Julie said. To be honest, Julie wasn’t baby crazy like Rebecca was, but she was happy for her nonetheless.

After their conversation continued and they had a small meal, the two friends went their separate ways, and Julie followed the directions the man gave her. After a relatively short drive, she arrived at an abandoned warehouse. “This isn’t a good start...” Julie sighed. She exited her car and walked towards the decrepit building.

Julie approached the front door and gave it a knock, and after no reply she opened it. To her surprise, the inside was a drastic difference from the exterior. It was filled with high tech equipment, and it looked to be a state-of-the-art facility. There were around ten people in lab coats walking around at a frantic pace.

“Surprised?” asked the bald man. “A little bit...” Julie replied with a smile. “Let’s talk in my office.” he continued. He led her into a large office, where the long-haired man was waiting, one of his hands in his suit pocket.

“So, Julie, I guess we should properly introduce ourselves. I’m Mr. Black.” said the long-haired man. “And I’m Mr. White.” said the bald man. “Right. Well, you guys already know who I am.” Julie replied.

“Yes, we’ve been keeping a close tab on you, and we believe that you’re the perfect candidate for our testing.” said Mr. White. “Testing? For what?” Julie asked. “For this.” said Mr. Black, pulling a bottle of pills out of his pocket.

“It’s an experimental drug that we’ve been working on for years. If it works, it could drastically change human history.” “Thats...a pretty hyperbolic statement.” said Julie. “It’s true. You won’t see it’s outcome until the end of the experiment, but it could be revolutionary.” said Mr. White.

“What’s so special about these pills, anyway? Am I going to grow wings?” she asked. “No, but there may be some side effects. Nausea, mood swings, weight gain, but it is expected, should the pill work.” said Mr. Black. “And how often am I supposed to take these pills?” Julie asked.

“Once a week over the next ten months or so. We realize that this is a huge commitment, and that’s why we’re offering so much money.” Mr. Black continued.

“We’ll also need you to come in at the end of every month so we can see how the pills are working. So I think that’s all the information we have for you. What do you say? Are you ready for a new beginning in your life?” Mr. White asked.

Julie thought for a few minutes before deciding. “Yes.” she said, swallowing one of the pills.
