Do you know why you never, when you go to a museum whit an arms and armor section, never see weirdly shaped swords like that, or armor with all sorts of protrusions, or a spiked mace-head attached to a gauntlet (no need to increase your reach, eh?)? Because they don't work and anyone who tried to go into battle like that would have quickly been killed. The same reason no one would bother to dress in a suit of leather armor (they weren't quite that tight or that thin, for some reason), and then not put on a helmet or anything to protect their neck.
