Oh wow is that a loaded question! Well I'm always up for criticism, the only time I hate it is when someone says something generic like "it doesn't look finished" and then doesn't explain themselves. That's happened several times on other pieces and god is it annoying!! So, yeah, go for it...just don't hurt me lol

loaded yes but for a reason, you see sometimes when we offer up help to others the people receiving the help/advice take something wrong or take it other than a helpfull opinion. generally the person giving the advice is truly (for the most part) just trying to help. for the most part i will not give someone advice or help unless they specifically ask for it for that reason and my "generic" disclaimer is this.... sure i am always will to offer up advice but understand the ego's stay at the door step i am my own worse critic and only offer up help or advice to someone that is truly interested in furthering their own skill level and looking for a fresh set of eyes that is willing to give no bullshit input.... soooo with that being said since it is you chris i offered it up cause i think your skill level has improved but i think you are at a point to where you are hitting your head on your first "glass ceiling" know what i mean your coloring just needs to break into a fresh new area where it can grow...

let's look at the piece.... your basic coloring and shading is good it just looks alittle basic and flat, let me explain and understand i was here too and it not a bad thing. i could be wrong but when you are doing your highlights and shades your staying in the same color family as the base color right? well i was too and that is your ceiling, when i first came across this group of tutorials i read them but didn't READ them know what i mean. then i took a piece that i was calling done and applied some of the thoughts and aspects of how she does them and holy shit that light in my head was like NO SHIT!!!!

here they are chris and i recommend reading them completely and then re-read them:

basically before you go check them out what ~navate does is use multiple color families and trust me it will truly help your coloring pieces cause when you really look at skin, clothes, anything organic really there maybe one base color but after that there are alot of other color families. you also and this is just more of my experience when you are first messing around with this learn or start using many many layers and different layer settings sometimes the best results are from just playing around and trying something just because and no other reason than that colors ummm react different with different settings of course but and i say BUT when you lower your opacity down to say like 30 or 40 percent it allows colors to mix with other colors and work together and give the illusion to depth of warmth or coolness. which brings me to another suggestion google color temperature when to use warm colors and when to you should use a cool color and what they actually are. before i researched it i had absolutely no idea what the hell people where talkin about in that respect.

and finially dont be afraid to start using bounce, amibant, and/or rim lighting it will also help your work... practice and experiement chris you will break through this ceiling and on to your next one... i hope it helps and if you need help or advice please ask anytime message or note me i will always respond eventually.

Actually that does help quite a bit, thank you Rich I actually do like getting critiques when they are constructive. However it's just sad the number of people out there who think they are giving a critique but are really just spewing a bunch of words that are not helpful at all. Giving a good critique is almost it's own art form.

This one is helpful and I'm always looking for new tutorials. I get bored at work and while I can't color at work, I can read and sometimes watch tutorials I'm a visual learner and rarely ever get it right when I try to fumble through it on my own.

your welcome, i am the same way but remember and i learned this one the wrong way even though i was warned about it. sometimes people will give you bad advice and/or tell you do something that is wrong or completely incorrect so be careful when listening to people cause some people are jerks and will tell you bad stuff just to mess with you. also remember what works for one person don't necessarily work for you find your own process of coloring learn other people's style and take what works for you.

you know what i was told this and it applies to you to, fumbling through it is the best way to learn cause it teaches you how to get your how to get yourself out or back to where you need to be plus some of the best lessons we learn is from our mistakes. i also personally believe it is the best way to learn/understand know what i mean? i like reading tuts too but sometimes it is better to watch it, there are alot of tuts on youtube of course but i also like watching and learning on livestream the only bad thing is too much chatting sometimes.

i would suggest this too cause it helped for me, watch a tut or what ever then try to do it at the same time, make since? watch it through then try to get the same results know what i mean and after your 4th or 5th failure something will click and you will say NO SHIT!!! it happens everytime trust me then you kinda feel stupid cause it soo easy but will remember what it took you to get there and that is the actual important thing for down the road...
