Description
Captain Roberts turned to his Chief Science Officer, ready to ask the question. She answered before he could ask."Calculations are complete. This should put us about 200 kilometres... ish.. from Deep Space 12".
"DS12 has already responded that they are ready to receive us", his Comms Officer supplied.
Roberts nodded, satisfied that this part of the preparation stage was complete. He returned to his chair and keyed in the Engineering Section in the internal comms. It took more time than usual for his Chief Engineer to respond. He briefly wondered if something had gone wrong on their end before the Tennessee twang of his Engineer came through.
"Engineering here. We're about as ready as we're going to be".
Roberts noticed a slight amount of doubt in her voice.
"Relax, Becca, the ship'll be fine".
"I'm not so sure," came the reply, "No one has ever done anything like this".
Roberts could not find any rejoinder to this. True, no one had attempted this before, but as many Starfleet Officers before had intimated, risk was part of the game. Such a response, however, would not spare his Engineer's nerves over the ship that she considered her baby.
Finally, he simply replied, "She'll be fine".
Switching to ship wide comms, he briefly informed the crew, at large, that the experiment was about to be underway. Having completed all necessary preparations, he took a brief second to savour the moment, the excitement and nervous anticipation coursing through him. It was days like this that reminded him why he had joined Starfleet. If this test was successful, they will have opened up the entire galaxy, possibly even other galaxies to the Federation, and a new chapter in Starfleet exploration. Some small, self-serving side of him, that he usually liked to ignore, also supplied the fact that his name would go down in history, that he may even be spoken of in the same breath as Cochrane, himself.
Letting out a breath he didn't realise he was holding, he turned to his Helmsman.
"Mr Halls, hit it!"
The first thing he noticed was that everywhere became brighter, more saturated. The second thing he noticed was a strange tingling sensation, creeping up his body. There was a bright flash, and a thunder-clap. and then, silence.
Coming to, Roberts scanned the Bridge, assessing his officers' status. It seemed that they were all slowly coming back to consciousness, just as he had. He quickly keyed in Engineering.
"Report!"
Seconds passed, then minutes. He glanced nervously around the bridge, noting that the ship seemed to be on emergency power. The viewscreen was showing static.
"Becca, for the love of god, please report the status of my ship!"
"The Warp Core is off-line, we're on emergency power. The Jump-Drive has fried multiple systems. I seem to recall you saying that the ship would be fine!" came the groggy, yet obviously angry reply.
Roberts, briefly, contemplated the reality of being the recipient of the wrath of a Tennessee woman, even one subordinate to him. The next few days were not going to be fun.
She continued, "We're working to fix the problems, now. The Viewscreen should clear up momentarily, and we have minimal impulse. Aside from life support, that's about it, for now."
As if on cue, the static cleared from the viewscreen. The Bridge Crew were treated to the scene of two ships beginning to engage each other in battle. They hadn't seemed to notice the sudden appearance of the USS Hunter. It struck Roberts that one of the ships looked like they had strapped some scaffolding to one of the Giza Pyramids, and somehow got it to fly. Either way, neither of the ships looked even remotely like Deep Space 12.
Nervously licking his upper lip, Roberts turned to his Helmsman.
"Lieutenant, where... exactly... are we?
