Patlabor is an anime series set in the near future (now near past, the year 2000). It is a character based story, centered around the early days of labor (giant robot) policing in Tokyo bay. Its not as heroic a job as you might think and most of the characters are misfits that don't gel with rest of the police. They often get berated for the destruction involved in an arrest, even though they saved the day.

It's a old series created in the early 90s, so the animation seems a little off compared to more recent series. However, the characters, Mecha design and plots often shame newer series. I would warn you that the films are quite serious in tone, so do not expect them to be light hearted affairs

Cool! Maybe i'll go find something of it! Although i'm not a big mecha fan... the only mecha i liked were Evangelion's Angels...

But i'll search to know more!
