Some of the names people have come up with for pairs are fun. I do like Buttonbelle and Flashlight. Though, personally, I'll always be a fan of Rarity and Spike. It'd be nice if years down the line it could be made canon that they do get together. Perhaps a potion could be made that would make Spike into a Pony, or Rarity into a Dragon? Seeing one, or the other, do something to illustrate their commitment towards each other would be sweet.
They could also make it a relationship where they both just enjoy working together? Twilight doesn't really seem to need an assistant anymore. I'm sure Rarity would delight in Spike being her Number One Assistant / Partner in opening a Boutique in Canterlot.
Hehe. For me it was the opposite... I didn't remembered seeing the word "shipping" when I was learning english, so for me shipping was just "wanting the characters to get together". Just a while later that i remembered what shipping really means. XD
Rarity and Spike is an interesting pairing... it's so differente. And some of the design of how their kids might look like is really impressive! But I read somewhere that someone who works on the show said that it will never be canon.

Oh, well. It is a show meant for kids. Having a relationship between Spike and Rarity would likely be more confusing than fun.
The idea of him having a "Crush" on her makes for far more "Family Friendly" content since many kids get a "Crush" and mom, or dad, step in to explain those feelings.
This makes me wonder if Twilight will ever have a talk with Spike about his crush on Rarity? Explain to him how he is still young and has a lot to learn before thinking about relationships. Heck, I'd be happy to see Twilight treat speak like her son instead of her assistant. She technically is his mom since she did hatch him. Seeing Twilight be a parent would definitely be a nice change.

Mom Twilight is best Twilight! I love when there's fanfiction and art of their relationship like mother-son. It can be so touching. I would looove seeing them like that.

I always feel happy when Twilight is portrayed as a mom to Spike instead of as her friend / assistant.
I read a great story about Spike showing a lot of concern for Twilight since she goes off a lot on adventures where it isn't for certain she'll come back. He gets Twilight to let him sleep with her instead of in his basket bed. He snuggles into her torso as if it were a pillow and makes comments on how he sees her as a mom and doesn't want to ever lose her. It's very sweet.
There's also a cute video of a comic for Mother's Day where Spike is rehearsing what to say to Twi for the special day. She catches him and warmly moves beside him and says, "Shh. Mommy loves you, too, Spike."
I really would like to see an episode where we see how Spike was raised and what it was like for Twilight. Perhaps it could be one where Spike sees all the fillies and colts with their parents and wishes he had something like that with Twilight. They then reflect on what happened between his hatching and episode one. It could perhaps end with Twilight acknowledging she has become so focused on her studies and responsibilities that she's forgotten one of the most important responsibilities she could ever have of being a loving mentor to Spike.
