Description

Well, this took a little longer than I had planned 😅

I actually had it sketched out as Samus' classic orange suit a few days before Metroid Dread was even announced. So of course, while every artist on twitter managed to illustrate stunning fanart of the new costume within 45 seconds of the design dropping, it took me a while to catch up.
I do particularly like the new design, especially the organic elements. The blue tendrils that wrap over and into the suit like elastic muscle tissue. It seems like a callback to the Fusion suit, which is ugly as hell, but at least was conceptually fascinating. I tried to convey the interconnectivity of the organic and mechanical elements in this design, not to blend them, but to layer them. Like a python winding through an engine block.
In the future I'd like to do more strictly mechanical/artificial/robotic illustrations. My style of art is kind of soft, and blendy which works well for Pokémon guts but becomes challenging when drawing machinery.

A couple people on IG asked about the organic components, so I thought I'd do a lore dump here-

Samus' suit in Metroid Fusion was radically altered by a "Metroid Vaccine" that saved her life from an X-parasite infection. That new "fusion" suit was visually distinct from her original one in many ways, but most obviously because of these bluish elastic structures that wrapped her chest and limbs. The suit also made her extremely vulnerable to cold (just like a Metroid) so it stands to reason that the altered suit had adopted some of the biological components of Metroids. It's mere speculation, but the Dread suit also has similar elastic muscle-like features, and so I tried to incorporate that into the illustration.

Also, it's all kinda silly because her suit is-

A. Totally fictional video game tech that can't be realistically quantified or depicted.

B. Even within the narrative fiction of the story, it's some kind of hard energy/nanotech stuff that can materialize and dematerialize and be altered or restructured in a totally non-corporeal way. It's basically space-magic.

But it was fun to draw regardless.
