Charles took a long swig from his mug and glared coldly at William.
"Straighten up kid, you look like a scared little girl. Pretend you're a man for once." He patted the boy's back. "Jordan will be here in no time, don't embarrass me."
Indeed, they heard laughter from outside the window, and the inn's door open with a bang. In came three men and a woman.
"A girl. Here?" said William, surprised.
"Are you stupid, kid?" Charles nearly choked on his beer. "That's Jordan! Stop staring, could cost you an eye..."
Jordan, chatting loudly with her companions, sat in a far corner of the inn and motioned to the inn-keeper. Soon, a bottle of gourmet whisky was brought to their table.
"If you two talk, not a word about that silly hat of hers. She'd ripped some guys apart already for dumb jokes".
"So that thing on her head is a hat?"
"Not a word!" Charles snapped quietly and smacked Williams on the back of the head. "She told me once, drunkenly, that she first saw one of these as a kid, in a comic or something," he shrugged. "Pirates are s'possed to wear these, or whatever".
He drank up his beer and pulled on the boy's shoulder.
"Come, let's say hello".
Charles walked up to Jordan's table, guiding the visibly resistant William in front of him.
She gave the boy an ice-cold glance and smiled at Charles heartily.
"Charlie, it's been forever! What's this, got yourself a brat?"
"I heard you're about to rob one of the New Union's banks," Charles returned the smile. "Just thought you could use a good hacker and this kid here knows his way around security systems." He patted the boy's back.
Jordan smiled nastily, a hint of madness in her eyes.
"Where's the fun in robbing banks if you're not risking a bullet to the head?" she laughed out loud, sending cold shiver down William's back. "But let's hear it, sit down, both of you." She rolled her eyes and fixed a bored expression. "My boys are too dull for that kind of fun."
They sat and one of the "boys" fixed them each a neat drink. Jordan put her gun on the table, nonchalantly.
"She didn't like Will, that's not good," thought Charles. "Need to find a way to convince her."
"Still carrying that old piece?" He tried to sound cheerful.
He remembered the gun, an RG74 Viper. Must've been like what, six? seven? years since he'd lost it in a bet.
"What can I do, I'm a woman of sentiment" said she, rising her hand to her temple in a theatrical gesture.
The door behind them opened, letting in a gust of cold air.
"More patrons!" Jordan laughed, gesturing invitingly to the new comers, "sit down, I'll introduce you to somebody".
