Description 6. Here's the final scan. For the background I just started adding shapes with the color pencil. All that stuff is pretty much improvised. Once I've finished with color pencil, I sometimes go back in...like I did with the rubble here. I'll add a bit of white paint to punch up the highlights a bit. I also like to use a bit of water color on top of color pencil because the wax from the color pencil causes the paint to bead up on the paper and creates a bit of a surface texture. It's hard to see in the scan, but it's there hehe.

Once I'm content with the whites, I'll usually go back in with the markers and punch up some shadows here and there.

That's about it I guess, but feel free to throw any questions at me. I'm sure there's a lot of things I didn't think to mention.

Piece was done on smooth bristol board with prismacolor and copics (cool greys) with white watercolor paint and white color pencil

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! This brief but on point tutorial illuminated a lot to me and how you work. As I stated before I will try this technique out on a composition of my own or two.

Just followed this process from your suggestion to find this on the "Blok" piece, and I hope you don't mind a few questions.

First, how do you manage to get the watercolor put on top of the colored pencil to actually absorb into the paper? You don't find the colored pencil blocks absorption?

and second, how do you determine what will be done with the warm grays and what will be done with cool grays?

Out of idle curiosity, have you ever done traditional tonal artwork with any other shades other than grays? Say a piece of all greens or blues? Or do you find this method works best with grays?

Thank you for your time and patience!

ChristopherStevens In reply to silvertales [2012-04-19 14:30:58 +0000 UTC]

The watercolor doesn't actually absorb through the color pencil, it sits on top. It can be easily scratched off. I don't use it much anymore and that's one reason why. I don't see it lasting too long before it starts to flake off. Maybe I'm wrong about that though.

Warm and cool depends on the piece. Sometimes, I want an effect (like the Michonne or Vampirella) and sometimes I just want to represent colors. Reds and yellows are warm ad blues and greens are cool..that sort of thing.

I stick to grey because I have so many shades. I only have a few shades of blue or green. I have experimented though like the Hellboy Jr. piece.

Thanks very much for the reply, and the insights, very helpful info!

I'm definitely going to apply this to my upcoming projects, as I have plans to translate an earlier sketch into a grayscale piece soon.

This is... FANTASTIC. I should try out the combination of copics and watercolors. What kind of watercolors do you use, if you don't mind me asking? Or what do you suggest?

Hey Chris!
I'm more or less one of your silent watchers, mostly busy improving myself. But I've got 2 questions for you!

I always thought that when you work with watercolour, everything gets messy and gets everywhere, creating that interesting accidental effect you see in alot of watercolour paintings. But how do you do it?

Oh and one more question:
Do you use the white pencil to create the gradient between your brightest grey and solid white?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to Marc-F-Huizinga [2012-01-14 06:15:31 +0000 UTC]

I use the white watercolor sparingly. Smetimes to punch up a highlight that I've partially created with the markers or maybe I'll heavily dilute it to get a subtle texture for rocks or metal. I wouldn't have any idea how to use watercolor any other way hehe. I use it just to help render things that are already partially rendered with markers. The key word for my pieces...sparingly.

When I first started with these, I did use color pencil for that, but nowadays it's just marker and paint. Occasionally, I'll use color pencil for a texture effect for say...blue jeans or stone.

Good luck!

Marc-F-Huizinga In reply to ChristopherStevens [2012-01-14 14:53:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. I'll be sure to pick up some white watercolour later
today so I can test it out myself!
I tried to do something last week with some acrylic paint, well that certainly is a no-go for highlighting pieces done with marker haha.

Thanks again!

ChristopherStevens In reply to Marc-F-Huizinga [2012-01-14 15:34:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, acrylic wouldn't work. The reason watercolor does is because it's transparent. You can dilute it to make it really transparent for subtle effects or leave it thick for hard highlights. It's a good counterpart to marker that way.

Hey Chris---How do you keep the marker looking so smooth? I keep seeing my pen strokes when I use the gray markers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to DrewEdwardJohnson [2011-04-10 19:59:39 +0000 UTC]

I just saturate the paper with tons of ink. Small circles as I go and they usually require two layers. One layer always looks a bit streaky.
