Description He thinks he's rescuing her from a watery grave. In reality, she's in her element. This legendary predator has chosen to lure her prey in, not through a sexual seduction, but through a more subtle one...an apperance of innocence and desperation. The only question now is...what will she do now that she has him?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Created for #digibrush as a part of their Sirens mass art trade [link] . Historically, the siren is a predator who hunts through her prey's biology--sailor sees naked female. What do you expect the sailor to do? I decided to interprete the legand a little differently. A predator with only one weapon in her arsenal is a fairly ineffective predator. After a while, biology has to wise up. And of course, there is a chance of a more innocent motive. Given that she's chosen to lure in a man in a desperate situation, I don't find that all that likely.

Done entirely in Photoshop, using Wacom Graphire 4by5 tablet. Detail shots and random boastings are here: [link]

Lots of time, effort and practice.

I suggest starting out by drawing and coloring line-art to learn how to use all the tools. Coloring my webcomic taught me more about Photoshop than any book ever did. Most of the pictures here are mostly just using the brush tool and color, and studying my rear off whatever way I can.

Thanks for the compliment!

Owch - that looks like it's going to painful. Clever twist on the siren myth.

Anyway I agree with the other commenters (commentators?), it's always refreshing to see someone explaining their motivations. It's something I try to do, and I wish more people did it and weren't members of the "..." brigade...

Explaining why you did things is half the fun. The only time I don't is when other people are supposed to interprete the meaning, and I don't do much art like that. I guess you could say I'm a selfish artist...most of the meanings in my work belong to me, though I'm happy to share.

terzetto [2006-02-16 04:40:07 +0000 UTC]

Beautiful image! I love the composition and the subject and how that's worked into the representational elements of the piece. Above the waterline it's turbulent and chaotic while bellow the waterline it's calm and soothing. This compliments the irony of the subject very well.

Also, your attempt at underwater representation succeeded very well here. Her tail is fabulous as are the embellishments like its shimmering quality and the school of fish in the bg.

The final irony is that it almost looks like the mans boat is about to be capsized so it seems as if he's going to end up out of his element and in need of her aid soon enough ^_~.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

christwriter In reply to terzetto [2006-02-16 07:59:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

This was I think the tenth sketch on sirens that I did before I was satisfied with it. I did intend a little of the break you noticed, between the storm and the underwater part, but that was mostly after I realized I was doing it.

The boat-on-the-verge-of-capsizing was intentional. And as she's going to get him one way or another, the only thing kinda uncertain is what's going to happen to him once he IS in her element. She might offer aid...she might not. I'd say she would, but then...I don't know. I don't always get to say what my characters are going to do.

Thanks for your in-depth critique, too. Much appreciated.
