The strongest restraints weren't the chains, or the iron bars or the cold massive walls of the labyrinthine fortress. It was the solitude. Not from people; the prisoners of Orotheim stuck together through all the hardship and punishment the guards were unsettlingly eager to dish out. Their spirits together wouldn't break under something like that.

What broke him was his literal humanity. The realization that no matter how strong of will all of them could be... his body would still die first. He wasn't nearly as big or as strong as any of them, but he still had to do their kind of work. He couldn't stay up working as long as they could and he couldn't go without eating as long as they could. His body was starving and collapsing; his insides were burning up and shrinking. And his mind was slowly dying.

Out of desperation, he spent the few hours of night looking for anything to relieve his crushing pain.

It was only a matter of time before the Merchant of Solace came to make him an offer.

Sorry for the long hiatus. Life decided to get in the way, and a lot of it made me start dragging my feet on both commissioning and posting.

I don't really expect things to settle down anytime soon, but I'll try to post more often.
