Description Right : [link]
Middle
Left [link]

Complete Scene: [link]

After the response on my War March picture, I decided to add on to it, to make a larger scene. Placing the two sides right next to each other seemed awkward, so I made a landscape to go in the middle and serve as a transition.

I am attempting to design these three pieces in a way that allows them to work together, or stand on their own. The composition involved there is much more challenging than anything I've done before, but I think this one turned out well.

Each one of the three pieces is 16x9 ratio, so as a whole, so the complete scene will be 48x9.

I don't know why, but it's my favorite part of your picture. Amazing colors, shadows and that mysterious castle... I don't need another parts of this scene to imagine wonderful battle!

Thank you.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoy this segment.
I did my best to make all three pieces work well as standalone images, as well.

I love how you do this, could you tell me how you do this, so I could try to incorporate this into my pictures? or is it a secret ^^

Thanks again. Sorry for the slow replies, by the way.

I work in black and white before adding color. I think that makes it much easier to manage the depth and perspective of the scene.
I'll be glad to answer, if you have any other questions, as well.

Wow that seems like alot of time though, I don't know for sure, but when i draw people I need to see the colour of shade on their skin, but in your case it works the total opposite, thank you for the advice, I'll try to keep that in mind next time

It's a rather fun approach.
I think separating the lighting and coloring makes it easier to pick the right shades.

It's interesting how the left and right shots, each showing a defiant army, is very clearly warlike, and the full picture shows an epic battle of colossal proportions, but the middle shot betrays a beautiful landscape, the peacefulness of which must be sacrificed in order to go to defend that which is good.

Or I'm reading it totally wrong. I do that a lot. ^_^;

Chromamancer In reply to Waffle-Wizard [2011-04-28 18:24:40 +0000 UTC]

You're not reading that wrong, but it isn't an interpretation that I thought of when making this picture.

I was simply thinking about designing a landscape that didn't include pieces of the armies on either side.
One of my goals in this piece was to design the three parts in a way where they can each stand on their own without seeming incomplete, while maintaining a composition that lets them fit together into a more epic piece.

I like your interpretation of it, though.
It's totally correct now.

I like drawing interesting backgrounds, but I don't make pure landscapes all that often. I'm glad to hear that this one stands well on it's own.

The middle piece here doesn't have any dramatic army lines, so it is probably the one I am least sure of, so I'm glad to hear that you enjoy it.

It looks so peaceful, you wouldn't know what was happening on either side.

Perhaps not the most epic of the three pieces, but still has it's charm. Lots of colour and intriguing scenery.
Looking forward to the final set.

Thank you.
This is my least favorite of the three, too. The landscape of the other two put some constraints on what I could draw here, and there isn't as much variety as what I would prefer in a pure landscape piece.

I'm glad you enjoy it, though.

It looks so peaceful. If I had just seen this picture I would have never guessed anything about the war that seems to be going on.
Also the way the night flows into the bright light on the right...
