Description
Those who saw my last screenshot got a taste of the Work In Progress of this and now I've finally completed what is only my second digital painting of a real (non-Fictional) person so far, but still having made use of the things I've slowly learned from those other ones when it comes to my semi-realism style...And that's what I love about Japanese Musicians, they are often real-life semi-realism
A reference photo was used, but the lighting was too uniform and the background very plain, so while the pose is the same, the lighting, colour and background was up to me to make more interesting (I changed his vest to a sexier type too
Edit: I added a bit more muscle definition in the arms and some texture and refining of the clothes. The hands though were the part I fixed most due to critiques on that.

Since you seem to like people visiting your stuff:
I never knew Gackt was so buff... xD He looks better with black hair than as a blondie.
...
...
But I still like Yoshiki better...

Everyone likes people visiting their stuff I do think black hair looks more "natural" on Asians in general, I do like the blonde though since I'm fond of blonde hair, even if it's tinted, but then there's the issue with constantly having to re-colour it as it grows. Here though it's neither, he actually made red hair look good in the original pic

Gackt--the perfect subject for any drawing. God, he is hot and an awesome musician/singer! I want to draw him--but I am going to wait a bit until I get some more anatomy down ^_^; Excellent job on him.

Lol, yeah - learning anatomy is more fun when the subject is attractive that's the mature thing to do, there's pictures even I'm waiting to do until later so I can be sure they'll be better off
your drawings look pretty good though, so just keep at it

Thanks sometimes I've considered a tutorial, but some of the texturing effects I'd rather keep secret. Most of my compliments are on that, and since I'm still no pro on anatomy and perspective etc - it's really the only thing I have against other artists who are better at drawing people in general. I can say it's good, but my texturing is more convincing - even without needing photo's to get it
but I do use custom brushes for some of it, so the tutorial wouldn't work 100% unless people had those same brushes

It gave me shivers...the good kind....love the way you make it seem glossy but still as if it's drawn with pencil. And I absolutely love the clothes...specially the vest...reminds me somehow of Cloud from Final Fantasy(may only be cause it's leather?) and the hair is...is..gah I want! btw the hands...or more specific the thumb looks odd..somehow...don't ask me how..it just looks off..but I have nothing to say really I could never replicate anything like this... -bows down into the dust- thou art the Master!
Rambling again..going now...

The "pencil" look is something new to me I always thought my digital art looked far form traditional-like. I think this might be near impossible to do in pencil, the texture of the paper wouldn't allow such smooth shading
sometimes texture is needed to make the art more interesting though
Cloud's jacket isn't leather (we don't want him too sexy ) I don't know what I based this off, I just wanted something that looked nicer than the plain black T-shirt he had on
Lots of people mentione dthe thumb, I just couldn't be bothered fixing it a second time

so true so true..though you should see one of my classmates pencil sketches...it's bloody awesome..
(snickers)I haven't seen FF I've only seen a buddy of mine cosplay him and he had on a leather something...or I guess that was fake leather but you know what I mean.. I absolute love it though..btw stupid question comming up..you are gay right? no straight man can have such grate taste..in both clothes and models xDD

As I was reading the description and you wrote that you were trying "semi-realism" I thought "Gackt already looks semi-real in real life". And then that's pretty much exactly what you wrote
I really like the lighting in this. And it's amazing how real everything looks. The leather really looks like leather. There's the same shiny highlights on it. And the floor really looks real. There's the reflection in it, and the texture just looks very real. How did you get it to look like that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to B-gata [2010-04-04 12:06:15 +0000 UTC]
Lol, I bet many would agree - it's gotta be the makeup, makes him too beautiful, like a Final Fantasy character
I love leathe rmyself so for a while now I've had a general idea on how to simulate that look Having three leather jackets myself - I should know
the reflection wasn't too hard actualy, it was a copy of Gackt himself after I finished him that was motion-blurred and reduced opacity
many textures on the floor, jacket and various places were acheived using these rough-looking custom brushes I made ages ago in combination with various filters that I've come to learn the uses for

Don't take this the wrong way but - did he break his left thumb?
Also, he must wax like a maniac.
Still, the lighting is great and the face and clothes are done very well. The overall quality of your characters has improved a lot since I last checked. Rock on!

Chromattix In reply to PlasmaX7 [2010-03-26 04:16:38 +0000 UTC]
Wax? I guess you mean because he looks too smooth they usually have flawless skin in their photo's - it's Ok for muscicians to wear makeup
and wax themselves too, the Japanese aren't typically hairy anyway though (lucky them, I hate body hair
) that thumb was giving me trouble from the begginning, I fixed it once since it was even worse before but I still don't know enough about anatomy, especially in hands so I just left it...I've done way worse before, as you implied

PlasmaX7 In reply to Chromattix [2010-03-26 10:52:52 +0000 UTC]
Oho, don't be reading too far into my implications. My intention was to point out how much better you are now! I guess the smoothness of his skin just threw me off a little because it's quite unusual to me and the lighting of this image strongly accentuates it. I'm more used to seeing this kind of smoothness on women (a.k.a. [link] ).
Ah, I know what else was throwing me off about the arms - they look like he's holding them up, not resting them on his legs (no depressions in the skin around the resting areas) and if he was holding them up, there'd be a harsher definition (read: stronger lines, not bigger bulges ) to the deltoid muscles on his shoulder. His left eye is also bigger than his right eye, his right cheekbone is more prominent than his left, and the right boot looks significantly larger than his left (honestly, I fear for where that left boot is fit!
).
Ok, I'm getting too far into this critique because I'm extremely nervous about something in real life and trying to avoid thinking about it. xD But nevertheless, I hope you take this on board, even if you don't make any further adjustments to this image (I can really appreciate the desire to leave an image be, and at a certain point you've got to stop F###ing it around and move on, at least I do!). You really are getting much better, the details on the face (nice nose) and hair and clothes proves that.
Monster comment, dammit. Hope you like reading them as much as I do.

The background and textures look great. A lot of things look great. I could pick on areas that are not great, but every art you do has a challenge, and this one is done. Maybe next time you can work on improving the hands. Fingers are not as curved from joint to joint, and the thumb in this looks broken because it is bent wrong. Hands are something a lot of people have trouble with, so maybe you can use a mirror and practice on a few sketches of your hands. You might even look at your hands in that angle, and follow the outlines, and border shapes.

Chromattix In reply to achipps [2010-03-25 00:25:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, I'm glad you understand too, as I'm one to often dish out critiques myself but I also respect the artist is done with it by then too and don't expect them to change it so long as they keep what I said in mind for next time
Yeah, I had a pretty low-res reference picture, the hands were kinda blurry/pixellated and so while the general shape was still visible - small features like joints and the spaces in between were left to the imagination, hopefully they'll get better with future attempts as the amount of serious hand-drawing attempts I've done so far can literally be counted on both hands
