Description
SURPRISE!!!...I bet you all thought I already had my Christmas deviation for this year submitted already with Frozen Flurry galaxy and even I thought that was going to be it too. But I realised I had enough time to make a more formal Chrissy deviation and like never before - post it on the actual dayAll my first christmas deviations were landscapes, and had cold blue/white colour combinations, so this year I wanted something completely different and decided to make a character the focal point rather than a tree (though you can see The wishing tree in the background lol) as well as choose a much wamer colour scheme - red and gold which was inpsired by a lovely poinsettia plant I got, you can seem them around the edges in here too
My concept here can be taken any way you want...the man in the red suit could just be a guy dressing up for the day, but on a deeper level - could he be the young Santa Claus before the beard (and the gut) came in? I'll let you decide
I used a found pic here as reference for the pose only, but all other concepts for the character design, clothing and surroundings are original and mine. Hope you like!... Though I only disabled critique on this particular one since it took a long time and I'm not sure if I could find motivation to work on it any more, so if you really need to crit, then do so if you know what you are talking about, But I most likely wont bother making any changes
Merry Christmas to all my beloved watchers! Just please everyone remember to not use my art in any way, be it on dA or off without permission from me

Thankyou, I do both digital drawing in Photoshop, and 3D as well, some use both, some only one...This one here has no 3D involved - characters are too hard to get good in 3D lol.
I learned 2D digital art by myself with years of practice. But I learned the basics of 3D through a course I did and then built up on that, I've been doing 3D for about 2 years now

Mhm...
The style of drawing... is it like half realism?
The art is beautiful in itself, but there's something about the face that throws me off.. I can't place ya. The rest of it is amazing, but the face. It's good, a ton better than I could do
I can't place it, but just something about the face bugs me ><

Many refer to it as "semi-realism". The best examples I could think of would be artworks like these [link] and [link] - just two out of literally thousand I could show you I actually prefer this way of drawing characters over the photo-realistic way
Yeah, I suck at faces, no matter how many years I've been practicing, they still come out ugly. I wish I could just magically become pro at that without any more practice

Ahhh
Mhm'k
Ya, it's a nifty way
But hey, practice makes perfect, all in due time. Nothing just happens over night
Or in this case a year or two+ but still, patience is a virtue

lovely, warm and festive! (looks elvin, mayb Santa's hot grandson, hot Santa is...disturbing)
1 thing, but its probably just me (am rather blonde) whats happening with the belts around his legs?

Chromattix In reply to HideFromThem [2008-12-28 06:36:08 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, I was going to give him elf-ears. But I thought that just in case people wanted to imagine him being either a young Santa, or his grandson, well normal ears made more sense
the belts around his legs don't serve any purpose, they just make him look sexier

I might draw fan-art of him someday, but don't know when

Nah, I don't celebrate anything - I hate parties, it's mostly because I got a DD and have been checking over 2000 messages within the past 24 hours
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to PsyPing [2008-12-28 10:39:09 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, well the comments made up about 130 or so of the messages, the other 1900 or so were miscellaneous like faves and watches I think it's unreasonable to respond to every one, like those who just faved one deviation or just watched me without commenting or faving anything (I must have gotten 40 of those) But the really dedicated ones that commented what they faved, or faved more than a few deviations were thanked, since they'll most likely come back and watch
Plus I hate it when I drop a whole bunch of detailed comments or faves and never get a response...I've been giving my endless support to soooo many artists, some of which havn't even said a simple "thanks" in over a year
I feel ike I'm wasting my time with those really. So I ain't gonna be as ignorant with MY fans
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to PsyPing [2008-12-29 23:37:48 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, well as I said, if one like dme enough to give me 20 "you did well"'s ie - favourites, then I would surely thank them since faving more than say - three faves at once shows the person took time to look through you gallery and must have liked it a lot so they deserve a thanks
Still, enjoy not-being popular, sometimes when I have an unusually small number of faves and comments to check, I no longer take it as being "neglected" I see it as "phew...a break" But I'm still glad things are better than they were 2 years ago
Wonder how I'll cope with messages when I'm about to go away early Janurary and may not have any internet access for a month

Chromattix In reply to PsyPing [2008-12-30 23:10:24 +0000 UTC]
I worry about that too, there is one thing that I have to submit tonight on new-years, since it's a little tradition I've got going, I havn't missed a new years since joining here But I have a week before I go, so most of the excitement around any new submission normally dies off within a week anyway. I will still have some internet access while I'm gone, bu it will either be dial-up (which is TERRIBLE - being left wiating a minute just waiting for a comment to "send") or my othe roption is internet cafe's...But I don't want to be forking out $5-$10 a day just so I can thank people for faves
But I'll see when it happens
that sorting activity messages by artist is a great idea actually, you could probably post that in the "suggestions forum" I often say to someone "thanks for faving *deviation title*" thinking that's all they faved because their name only appears once, wedged between others in that set of 10, then I remove the messages only to find they faved another 20 or so later on
I would have given them a more appreciative comment if I knew that
