SURPRISE!!!...I bet you all thought I already had my Christmas deviation for this year submitted already with Frozen Flurry galaxy and even I thought that was going to be it too. But I realised I had enough time to make a more formal Chrissy deviation and like never before - post it on the actual day
All my first christmas deviations were landscapes, and had cold blue/white colour combinations, so this year I wanted something completely different and decided to make a character the focal point rather than a tree (though you can see The wishing tree in the background lol) as well as choose a much wamer colour scheme - red and gold which was inpsired by a lovely poinsettia plant I got, you can seem them around the edges in here too
My concept here can be taken any way you want...the man in the red suit could just be a guy dressing up for the day, but on a deeper level - could he be the young Santa Claus before the beard (and the gut) came in? I'll let you decide
I used a found pic here as reference for the pose only, but all other concepts for the character design, clothing and surroundings are original and mine. Hope you like!... Though I only disabled critique on this particular one since it took a long time and I'm not sure if I could find motivation to work on it any more, so if you really need to crit, then do so if you know what you are talking about, But I most likely wont bother making any changes

I think the Cadillac suits him more...or a shiny red Ferrari with little bells attatched to the rims 
I was thinking darker hair, such as red or even black, but they didn' suit it. Theres a lot of red already, and black made him look too "dark" in personality to be fitting for the Job as the jolly...former-fat man

I chose warm, Christmassy colours this year since all previous Christmas deviations had a cold blue/white combination. So this one is very different

Glad you enjoye dit, I spent quite a while getting the lighting and shading right, I think that's the most important thing (right after trying to get the character anotomically correct lol)

I did want a more "formal" look to this one too, like the colours and effects you see on those ridiculously overpriced Christmas displays

Heh, all those colored trees sound almost like something out of the Peanuts Christmas special when they went to that tree lot and saw all these different and brightly festive ones amongst that little one they eventually settled on.

As always your color use is gorgeous. I love the bright gold and red with the white of his hair and the tree in the back. It makes for a very striking painting. I also love the addition of the tinsel around his neck(which looks amazingly realistic by the way). Great work!

Phew, glad you like dthe clothing, since it's normally hard for me to "design" good clothing, Especially after seeing the elaborate, yet still cool costumes that those in Asia give to their characters...I suppose they just have a knack for it over there, probably fuelled by the clothing and culture there, whereas people her ein Australia do tend to dress very plain and caually

This came at just the right time. I'm currently trying to make a Christmas poem right now and this is becoming a basis for my inspiration. It's exactly the direction I wanted to go in the first place, giving me a great boost.

Just a tip on the hair, though, try making a custom brush that's made up of a bunch of little dots: it makes it easier to do the seperate strands of hair.
