Description
A combination of a warm, humid climate, a dense atmosphere, yet lower gravity than that on Earth means the plant life of Pandora are free to grow without nearly as much of the physical limitations that cap their growth size and speed as much as what happens to the plants on earth, growing under relatively harsher conditions and higher gravity by comparison. The result are phenomenal sized trees growing in seemingly endless forests and regular forest floor plants still taller than the average human. While most foliage is the tried and true green like it is here at home, some of the more unusual plant strains take on a blueish colour - which is rarely encountered on any vegetation on Earth, these are also the ones most likely to bioluminesce (glow) through semi-transparent leaves and stems at night time, possibly to attract pollinators during the frequent bouts of darkness that occur on Pandora, rendering traditional flowers not quite the useful bug-magnets they have proven themselves to be on the relatively brighter earth where their colours are more easily appreciated. Of course, this glow could just as likeley to be a way to ward off hungry herbivores from eating them. Large trees and plants lack this ability and tend to take on more earth-like colours and forms. This was actually, originally created quite a few years ago, shortly after my other work of the same theme (only with more focus on the plant varieties as they appear at night). But while sorting through some files on a slow day I thought I'd go ahead and upload this one too, while not as "fantastical" as the night version, I think it does have a better sense of realism and depth to it than the other one did

I'm glad you see it that way. Indeed the forests in the film struck people as disappointingly earth-like from an overall glance. But many times the fact its an alien environment reveals itself in the smaller plants that take on unique colours and forms which you just don't get anywhere in our world

I agree, and I actually loved the way the forests were so subtly different, that you didn't really notice it until you started looking. Makes you pay attention lol

I love this! It's not as obviously Pandora as the night scene, but it has subtle hints to it with the blue plants. This scene has a lot more depth too. I love the textures!

Originally when this was made I wanted to avoid too many unusal-coloured plants to make the artwork more versatile. I probably should have added some now though (I do remember seeing both orange and purple plants in the film in a few select scenes, though they seemed to be the only ones of their kind, suggesting these aren't "common" plant colours, even in this otherworldly forest )

The palm trees were stock photo's (there's a tall one on the left, and only the top part of one showing on the right corner) which were postworked in later in the creation process. There's also some stock Vue plants from Cornucopia 3D used as some "filler" plants in the lower areas. But the larger/more significant trees and plants were ones I made in Vue's plant editor (though they also received some painting-over after rendering too)

Magnificient idea and excellent realization! Fabulous!
And your idea of just turning the plants upside down
may appear quite simple, but very stunning!Β

I must admit, I learned the using of certain Vue plants upside down from somewhere else But hey - it's definitely information worth passing around

Is this the same Pandora of Avatar we're talking about?
Or am I missing something else?
Regardless, this is quite the interesting view and I love that you went for a more panoramic perspective rather than exploring the deeper depths from one side.Β The foliage and foresting details are especially engagingly gorgeous, providing to the lush atmosphere you've skillfully illustrated here.Β Love the lighting and sense of scale here too.Β You always know the best ways of making sure the viewer is fully immersed in the worlds you bring to life.
Excellent work, dude.

Yep, the one and the same
Sense of scale here was important, andΒ think the atmosphere/lighting was key to that. Since even though everything here is really big - it's still all 'to scale" relative to each other So I needed to make sure that these trees here certainly looked a lot bigger than any that exist in the real world today, even with no figures to compare them to

Ah, so I was right I.
Makes me wonder if you plan to explore many more types of these settings from the Avatar universe now that the film is being expanded into a film franchise?
Exactly, because it seems everything on Pandora is many times larger than the average of their Earth equivalents.Β Even the inhabitants of the planet give people like Shaq a run for their money in the height department!

Maybe I would. Don't know when the second film comes out, but I bet it'll inspire lots of fan-art, and maybe I'll join in too. Would be interesting to see some new landscapes and different environments travelled through in the next one. Surely Pandora couldn't possibly be all forest
The second part of your comment reminded me of how early on the movie it shows you an outdoor entertainment place just beyond the Avatar lab, where people (in their Na'Vi bodies) get some exercise playing games like basketball for instance - I wonder how high those hoops need to be

Well, the second film was announced several hours ago to be slated for release by Christmas 2017.Β That gives you awhile I guess before we'd be seeing anything of that sort from you in that department.
I think it deals with the sea more so than the forest this time around, so we might just have to look forward to seeing some majestic seascapes from you this time.
Exactly!Β That's exactly the scene I was thinking of. xDΒ It just fits so right.
