Description The classic apple tree, an iconic symbol of fertility, prosperity and in some cases - even the earliest days of man. Here in a controlled keepsafe to give it optimum conditions. But one has to wonder, is this the first tree that ever existed, synthesized by another species? Or is it humanity desperately trying to save one of the last?

This is my first of three submissions to the latest exhibit for the Luminarium's latest Gaia theme. Which I also proudly made it as the featured artist for the exhibit too and got interviewed, which can be seen here [link]

Created using Cinema 4D, Vue and Photoshop. I ran into a lot of issues with this one, being my last "complex" scene done entirely on my old computer. I owe a thanks to ~Kaioshen who rendered the Vue file for me since I would have been waiting days if I left it to my old system.

Other artworks will be uploaded in the coming days. I just don't believe in dumping a bunch of work at one. Let people digest one apple before feeding them the next

There's something about the lighting in this scene that makes it look and feel more fantastical than realistic, and it adds to the sci-fi feel, too.
How much of this was procedural? I can't imagine someone modelling this entire thing from the ground up.. although I wouldn't put it past someone who can make something this amazing.

Chromattix In reply to pie75 [2017-09-07 14:52:22 +0000 UTC]

A lot of it was modelled from scratch. Took a really long time. The tree wasn't though, it was created in Vue's plant editor (sorta like a procedural way of creating trees)

Cinema 4D doesn't seem to be as popular as other 3D apps these days, but it can still be used to create some decent stuff (I just use it because it's all I know how to use in terms of 3D modelling software )

I like the lab background in this piece.  I always like that kind of lighting and setting.  And the tree in the middle really helps to offset that.

Blue-Jedi In reply to Chromattix [2015-05-27 05:08:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I really like it when artists in any medium master that kind of inviting yet foreboding yet comforting dichotomy of a lab or interior space of a building that's lit with fluorescent lights, or something similar.    I just find that kind of thing exceptionally appealing for some reason.  There's that "this isn't nature gut it's just as good in a different way" kind of feel.

Michael Whelan, a sci-fi artists, also does some of what I described and what you mastered here.

Great stuff usually takes time.  Thanks for the reply on this

Hi there,

Firstly, awesome work! I have a question regarding it if that's cool? I'm currently involved in a group project at University and we're assigned to make a fully interactive game level inside Unreal Engine 4 that is made from container crates. My groups idea is to have some sort of mine shaft underground with a post apocalyptic feel that descends further underground and eventually the player discovers a futuristic plant lab.

Basically I want to make some sort of glass centrepiece that has foliage (but not trees) contained within it, and was wondering if I could have your permission to use this piece as reference because it's brilliant! No commercial uses can or will be made from this project, it's purely a university thing and I'll pass credit on to where I referenced any designs from. Thanks in advance

Chromattix In reply to LewCG [2015-01-28 09:21:16 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I suppose that sounds OK. Only for reference tough - the image can't be used as part of the actual project

It might also be worth doing an image search for terrariums too if you want more realistic references

Is Type1arts guilty of copyright infringement? Yes.

The following information is found at about.deviantart.com/policy/co… under the heading:

“What is Copyright Infringement?”

To simplify this question, copyright infringement occurs when you do certain things with a creative work which someone else produced without first getting the proper permission.

Some examples of copyright infringement (this is only a partial listing) can include:

1. Placing someone else's photograph or creative work online without proper permission.

2. Using a creative work commercially without permission.

3. Adapting someone else's creative work found in one medium to another medium, such as making a book into a movie or a photograph into a painting.

4. Modifying or editing a creative work without proper permission.

 – from Copyright Policy about.deviantart.com/policy/co…

Here are the facts: On March 18, 2014, Type1arts placed a comment on one of my images stating his intent to post it to his tumbler account. I responded within 17 minutes of his comment ordering him to cease and desist, and informing him of my right to refuse him permission to re-post my artwork.

Despite my notice Type1arts has posted my artwork without authorization on his tumbler account. As of this date further actions are underway.

I recognize that it is up to you as the artist to decide if you want to permit Type1arts to re-post your artwork, but consider the following: if this user has no respect for your right to control the placement of your work, what other violations of your rights might this user commit?

Consider and act as your judgment dictates.

Hmm, I looked at his dA gallery a while ago and didn't see anything there. I don't know what his Tumblr page is though.

As much as it annoys me when people most my art on Tumblr, it sadly seems unavoidable. As long as no-one is taking credit for it or using it to promote their own material (or selling it) then I guess there's no real danger present. Though it would be nice if they at least credited me and linked back to my dA gallery.

Type1arts posted the link to his site in his comment to you on this page: type1arts.tumblr.com/

Illegal re-posting of your art is not unavoidable. If you are annoyed when people re-post your art without permission then you should consult about.deviantart.com/policy/co… gain a more complete understanding of your rights under copyright law.

Professional artists control their work - the time and place of its display as well as the context of that display. I understand that your choices may differ - however, do not assume that there is no real danger, type1arts is a known and confirmed art thief. If type1arts is willing to steal your work, he is likely willing to sell your work without your knowledge.

Hmm, unfortunately there's little I can do that would make any significant difference unless we find proof of him using my work improperly or worse - selling it. If you find out he's selling it especially then indeed let me know

William-Black In reply to Chromattix [2014-03-23 13:42:40 +0000 UTC]

As an addendum to my reply below – type1arts does alter the artist’s by-line when he re posts it. Your work on his site appears as “Tree of Life” by “priteeboy-type1arts,” which goes to his intent. He is operating under the assumption that by changing the by-line and re-publishing the work one creates a new legal entity which now owns the work – one which you, the owner/creator of the work, are not aware of. His presumption is that so long as this is not challenged he can do what he will with the work. His assumption is legally unsound, of course.

Type1art’s website is designed to make it difficult for an artist to locate their own work, there is no index, only one long continuous page which you must scroll-through to find your work – this, of course, is intentional. Once you find your work you can click on it which gives you a specific page-url where the work resides – which you need in order to take action.
