Description The classic apple tree, an iconic symbol of fertility, prosperity and in some cases - even the earliest days of man. Here in a controlled keepsafe to give it optimum conditions. But one has to wonder, is this the first tree that ever existed, synthesized by another species? Or is it humanity desperately trying to save one of the last?

This is my first of three submissions to the latest exhibit for the Luminarium's latest Gaia theme. Which I also proudly made it as the featured artist for the exhibit too and got interviewed, which can be seen here [link]

Created using Cinema 4D, Vue and Photoshop. I ran into a lot of issues with this one, being my last "complex" scene done entirely on my old computer. I owe a thanks to ~Kaioshen who rendered the Vue file for me since I would have been waiting days if I left it to my old system.

Other artworks will be uploaded in the coming days. I just don't believe in dumping a bunch of work at one. Let people digest one apple before feeding them the next

Lovely!
This trully is a punch to how we managed to make everything in a laboratory!!!(even if you're reffering to aliens!)
It's a pity though they can't taste these apples!
I have nothing to say for the rest, it's absolutely captivating!
*They always give me a bunch of apples at once, then I'm trying to eat as much as I can!*

Everything is factory made these days Even the factories are made in a bigger factory

Surprisingly I don't eat apples myself. Their taste seems nice but I'm not too fond of the texture. I do like apple juice though, especially when I can't sleep on hot nights

I wonder if there is an end in these "factory"-chains!

I like apples, especially the green ones!
Apple juices are good too, but nothing beats a mixed-fruits juice!

I can see it now:

year 2102. Unchecked greed has all but destroyed Earth's biosphere. The little remaining topsoil is so saturated with pollutants that it can never be made fertile again. The once fertile plains of the midwest are now dust-covered wastes. The lush rainforests were cleared away long ago. The oceans are almost completely empty, drained of oxygen and nutrients by gluttonous algae mats.

To survive, Humanity is forced to live in massive, self-contained cities. Food is made from greenish sludge grown in underground tanks. Fresh air, real food, fresh water, and privacy are luxuries few can afford . The only thing keeping the cities from becoming too crowded is the colossal suicide rate.

Humanity cannot survive like this much longer. Every year the food vats produce less and less sludge. Inside the cities, birth rates are slowly dropping from a combination of environmental toxins and a simple unwillingness to bring a child into this miserable world.

In secure labs around the globe, scientists struggle to find a way to revive the dying planet. One group's efforts focus on reviving long-dead plant species from dried-out seeds. One of their experiments focuses on a plant that went extinct decades ago; Malus Domestica. The Apple Tree

That's all

Good short story That's only a hundred years from now, good thing I'll be dead by then

I hope it never gets to that point. I think man will change when forced to if that becomes the only other option. A lesson I learned from the recent incarnation of The Day The Earth Stood Still - not a great movie, but one line definitely struck me when they said that any advanced race, including the visiting alien's one - will only change when on the brink of extinction. Maybe that'll happen with us - a last-minute change is better than nothing I suppose

Could be that too! I like doing "loose concepts" that can be a variety of different things depending on the viewer's opinion rather than just "this is it, this is what it is" stuff

Thanks! I always say that having an interesting and creative concept is just as important as doing a good job artistically I often see amazingly-skilled artists almost "wasting" it by doing very cliche or typical-looking artwork Of course, there are some "classics" even I can't avoid in regards to subjects. But I do like my more original ones more

Haha!

Um, okay. So actually, this one was kinda spooky.

Because it looks so real, you know. Scary good, my friend, scary good! That's a very good thing!

Once again a lovely example of your artwork. Everything has painstaking detail in it and I could believe that this actually exists somewhere. The organic nature of the apple tree and the dirk surrounded by the chiseled smooth and flat texture of the lab are perfectly played off one another and make the contrast all the more resounding. The glowing tubes at the bottom are perfect and the bouncing of light in that area is hauntingly realistic. Wow!

But the best part I think is how the glass sphere bends the background so well. It really adds that extra touch of realism and attention to detail I've come to expect from your work and you've NEVER failed to produce. One word to sum this up:

WOW!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Razzmatazzy [2012-06-22 09:32:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the detailed comment. It shows you really took notice of everything in there (especially the light bouncing and reflecting all over the place - something that is horribly neglected in a lot of otherwise decent 3D scenes - lighting can make or break a scene no matter how good the models and details are ) And yes, I wanted a clear distinction between the colourful organic form of the sphere's contents compared to the smooth, shiny, sterile-looking surroundings

The background being warped through the glass is called "refraction" - something normally hard to draw, but quite easy and fun to play with in 3D. It was an effect I really wanted in there
