Description While still waiting for the flash file I went to get help with for my recently submitted Across The Universe calendar, I decided to use the free time I had to illustrate an idea I had in mind for a few years now. Just waiting for a "well, don't know what else to draw" moment like now. Trying to bring something a little new to the space and science fiction scene, I went for two gas giant planets either stuck in the most well balanced orbital dance ever, or more likely, moments away from collision. Something you just don't see in the genre. Not sure if this is what the event looks like, but it would be a pretty cool sight to see, and a terrifying one to be caught up in!

Yep. Exactly. Can't wait to see it if you ever decide to make it.

I'm glad someone actually coming up smashing ideas in this genre and I'm also glad that I watch that someone. Unlike the rest stuff I get in my inbox. Space art gets old really fast with the similar compositions over and over again. It's really challenging to keep it fresh.

There's always room for the classic style space scenes, but indeed they all start looking the same once in a while. Also rarely using any unique colour schemes (like the fact that most of them are blue, it's cool but I'm a bit bored of blue space art by this point). Even with planets alone it'll be interesting to see some interesting surface textures or something unlike what we have seen before. I guess it's a pretty limited genre though, anything non-cliche can be questionable in terms of whether or not it can even exist

But sure questionable concepts kept me hooked in space art (more
like saying sci-fi would be right I think) for now. If you can imagine it
then probably it might exist somewhere, if not in this universe then
maybe in some other universe then. A lot of recent findings in science
sound more like fiction already (or maybe I feeling it now because I'm
still young xD). At this point I think I've stopped being skeptical much.
Just focused on beauty and meaning than mechanism of nature. I don't
know how far big and small we could break down and label something
taken into account from nature. : P

Chromattix In reply to GabrielBStiernstrom [2013-11-28 23:28:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I would agree that it's getting harder and harder to find or create something new. There's only so much you can do with space art while still having it stick to the name, and many of those ideas have been swept up by other artists already There are some universal ideas though that just never get old, though they usually have to be well-made

Well, it's the most interesting space art scene I've seen in a while. And overall, it has a pleasant appearance. It's along 'the right lines' compositionally. Not sure if you want critique, but the scene has further potential.

Chromattix In reply to cosmicbound [2013-11-28 03:55:55 +0000 UTC]

Well you can try if you want, it all depend son how radical the changes have to be, I did have to commit to certain things being as-is when some related layers were merged (I just hate having to sort through 100 layers to find one )

MisterTotality [2013-11-28 02:51:19 +0000 UTC]

This is a very cool idea, and the first I've seen of its kind.Β  I do think that the gases would become heated, both from friction and from tidal forces.Β  It looks as though you've incorporated some of that here, so nice work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to MisterTotality [2013-11-28 03:58:40 +0000 UTC]

I sure did Though I will admit that was originally going to be flashes of lightning happening between the two, but then I realized that making it red to replicate internal heat showing through looked a lot more plausible and still gave a surreal effect

THANK YOU!! I tried to make something exactly like these a few years ago but couldn't pull it off. I wasn't even sure what two gas giants colliding would like. This pretty much sums it up. Amazing work sir, truly amazing.

Chromattix In reply to TylerCreatesWorlds [2013-11-28 03:57:13 +0000 UTC]

This idea had been in my mind for a few years too. I think I once heard someone mention it or something similar, but nobody drew it. I figured I waited long enough for the idea to surface in someone elses gallery and it didn't, so I drew it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TylerCreatesWorlds In reply to Chromattix [2013-11-28 04:53:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I talked about it with someone a long time ago. It might have been JoeJesus or Quaz or somebody. I was thinking that depending on angle and speed of the two planets, plus the gasses that make them up, aΒ direct hit at a high speed could maybe cause them to combust? Those things get hot as hell on the inside. Maybe the gasses would ignite or something, idk, I'm not an astrophysicist. I'm glad you made this, I've always wanted to get back to this idea but never could think of a good composition. This is far better than anything I would have done.

Once again, you've produced an absolutely eye-popping epic piece my friend. You really create a sense of the titanic gravitational forces involved. I wonder if the event will combine enough mass to trigger nuclear fusion and give birth to a new star in that system.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Mojomeerkat [2013-11-28 03:48:13 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou After finishing this I wondered that too, Jupiter wasn't far off from being a star, maybe if another one merged with it it just might have happened

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

webdev5555 [2013-11-28 02:00:38 +0000 UTC]

Yes, this can and does happen.Β  It hasn't been observed with planets (planets outside our solar system are dark and hard to see), but has been observed in binary star systems.

From the Wikipedia page on binary stars: "As a star increases in size during its evolution , it may at some point exceed its Roche lobe, meaning that some of its matter ventures into a region where the gravitational pull of its companion star is larger than its own. The result is that matter will transfer from one star to another through a process known as Roche Lobe overflow"

Anyways, do a google image search on "Roche Lobe overflow", the results are amazing.Β  As the bigger star starts to suck gasses off of the smaller star, the smaller star starts to look like a Hershey's Kiss.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to webdev5555 [2013-11-28 03:40:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I did one based around binary systems quite a long time ago actually priteeboy.deviantart.com/art/T… Though being an older piece, it doesn't quite have the depth and detail of this one here, but it at least proves I knew something like it existed...But only between stars. It's still a mystery if it can happen between planets, terrestrial planets are out of the question, they would either just float around each other or collide, with not much matter falling from one to the other (being solid and all) but two gas giants like here might yield a more interesting result, especially if the distance was only enough to pull the lighter elements in the upper atmosphere away but leave behind the rest
