Description This was my entry to the e-on software's Vue environment competition for this year, sadly I didn't even make it to the finals, rendering the 50+ hours I spent on this utterly useless, only to be beaten by some of the most mundayne and generic-looking Vue scenes I've seen an dthat I could have made in an afternoon using little mor ethan what the program provides you with. So much for originality in a landscape being taken into account, there's only a few finalists that I felt deserved to be there

Anyway, the original entry had no postwork (since it wasn't allowed) but this dA version here did have a little bit of it just to fix up some areas and make it look a little more natural, but nothing that I couldn't do in a single session. The actual 3D part is what took forever, modelling those weird alien plants in Cinema 4D was a pain, so was finding a creative way to make the surrounding landscape. Even the planets are pure 3D models, scaled up huge and pushed way beyond Vue's world limits, all materials are procedural too (but afte rthe final render I did overlay some faint rock texture on the rocky cliffs)

My comment here has just focused on the process of making it this time, there's surprisingly little to say about the concept itself, jut another one of my weird alien landscapes

This is so cool! I'd like to model something this complicated.. but it takes too long to render with my computer at the moment

Most 3D programs wouldn't have handled the billion or so polygons this had luckily Vue 7 has great polygon handling capabilities and makes complex scenes run (relatively) well, but it comes at a price - it tends to crash sometimes, especially on weaker computers. Still, I wouldn't have been able to make this scene in any other program

Aw man, I SO need to buy Vue! Keep those awesome works coming! They're inspiring!

PS: I know how you feel about the competition. I always tend to think outside the box when working on a piece for a competition and I usually come up with an original idea. The thing is that the populistic and generic ones usually win. You should've won the competition..

this is my kinda scene lol!
you should try being in the terragen scene:/
at least vue people are more accepting of scfi vistaz, Most terragenerz wud rather marvel at rocks and sand wtf aye.

but this is just wow man^^ i love the details in the flora all ur own imagine it looks very humid but i wud love to wait round 4 da sunset i bet that would b spectacular lol! I luv the ringed planet 2 and how u have managed 2 squeze in a little sister moon ^^

Chromattix In reply to Wetbanana [2009-08-27 05:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou very much I think most Terragen users think more "technical" than "artistic" since that's how the program itself behaves, thus the users are more concerned about making their images as photo-realistic to pictures from Earth as possible, which means no room for scenes like mine that are a bit far-out there

Yep, I create dit with the intention of it looking humid, this area is probably slightly warmer than the tropics, the water would feel like a nice bath and who knows what the sunsets would look like though I bet many would be blocked by that planet getting in the way of the sun

Either your right bout the other work TOTALY sucking, or theyre are some damn good artists out there!

Thanks! this is the first time in years where I have felt that a contest I entered was unfairly judged. I wouldn't say the others "suck" but they wer eincredibly plain and nothing that the Vue community hasn't seen hundreds of times before...This here better demonstrated Vue's less-used features too, like the ability to import objects (the large plants) Sub-surface scattering (on their materials) metablobs and displacement (the large rocks) metaclouds (for the horizon) and just the plain clever use of using procedural materials to make actual 3D planets in the sky directly in Vue (the default Vue planets are too low-res ) I think I utilised more of Vue's tools to make this than any other entry did...it may not be the most "realistic" but I still think it was the most creative and original

listoman In reply to Chromattix [2009-08-25 16:50:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, you put that very well. I know nothing about the software your talking about (I like JUST googled it!)

I cant imagine something like this WOULDNT need to use just a whole bunch of nifty features! (when I do elaborate edits in GIMP, I use a whole bunch of the filters and tools and whatnot)

Meh, Realistic images are cool, but hardly ever does a digital scene HAVE to look realistic to look good.

Thanks! well that's not really Saturn (too bad, since life in our Solar System would be an amazing find ) just a fictional planet in a much warmer location

Thanks for faving too

wow-this is gorgeous. It's so serene looking. I think I like the water the best, and the plants and such reflecting off of it and the ripples ^^

The color choices worked well too~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to ToxikElement [2009-08-12 07:27:52 +0000 UTC]

Water is actually kind easy to do in 3D (unlike most other things ) there's hardly a scene where I wouldn't include it

The colours were almost going to be very different, I remember experimenting with a white or yellow sky, but purple semmed to match the plants better

Not enough modern digital space art/sci-fi landscapes feature weird and exotic alien scenery like this, so I'm glad you do make them. Everything has very otherworldly tones, too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to cosmicbound [2009-08-10 13:47:45 +0000 UTC]

Lol, when it comes to sci-fi artists, you can bet 70% will go no further than space and planets (even though those are cool but can be hard to make original at times) of the remaining 30% - 29 of them will only ever focus on the mechanical side of things like those dramatic sci-fi cities and spacesgips (which if I knew how to do - I'd do that more often too ) and that tiny remainder left will be responsible for alien plant and animal life - the vital but neglected side of making any sci-fi world (each planet is bound to have their own plants and creatures, they surely wouldn't all be Earth-clones ) in fact, I think there's only ONE person I watch who creates alien plant concepts similar to the way I do

I have plenty more ideas for later too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cosmicbound In reply to Chromattix [2009-08-10 14:52:46 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, and awesome that you've got more on the way. Also, your style is rather different than that one other person's. Another reason people may make so many fairly dead planets is probably because, in truth, most of them are. No excuse to stay away from the interesting stuff, however.

Love the rock formations.....you and I both like to mix or own models with solid growth, hehe....I really like the almost triangular, small, tan things....they're quite similar to some of mine....

Oh, and I assume you noticed that the simple, palm tree island won the big prize.....next year I'm gonna go simple, a sunset with palm trees....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to FCLittle [2009-08-07 04:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou, I modelled the rocks out of Metablobs with displacement materials which were then "baked" into that shape, what I learned from =nukeation but yes, like you - I mix both self-modelled parts and SolidGrowth plants for the alien scenery I do here and there, it gives more freedom beyond the limitations of the plant editor

I can't believe that island one won, that has gotta be the least creative Vue scene I've seen in the finalists right after that two grass covered hills...I personally think it was a rigged competition
