Description
This was my entry to the e-on software's Vue environment competition for this year, sadly I didn't even make it to the finals, rendering the 50+ hours I spent on this utterly useless, only to be beaten by some of the most mundayne and generic-looking Vue scenes I've seen an dthat I could have made in an afternoon using little mor ethan what the program provides you with. So much for originality in a landscape being taken into account, there's only a few finalists that I felt deserved to be thereAnyway, the original entry had no postwork (since it wasn't allowed) but this dA version here did have a little bit of it just to fix up some areas and make it look a little more natural, but nothing that I couldn't do in a single session. The actual 3D part is what took forever, modelling those weird alien plants in Cinema 4D was a pain, so was finding a creative way to make the surrounding landscape. Even the planets are pure 3D models, scaled up huge and pushed way beyond Vue's world limits, all materials are procedural too (but afte rthe final render I did overlay some faint rock texture on the rocky cliffs)
My comment here has just focused on the process of making it this time, there's surprisingly little to say about the concept itself, jut another one of my weird alien landscapes

Hmm, I should try this out as my own background then yes that would be an incredible sight, I would have one eye on the trees and one on the planet just to make sure I don't miss anything

I'm a bit scared of those plants. Like...they'd just reach up and grab you...Or they have a strange texture/feeling to them if you touch them. *shudders* Pretty. But creepy. I like it.

That's how I feel about many existing sea-life...fun to look at, but it would be a cold day in hell before I touch them, invertebrates like anemones look so pretty, but they would feel so gross

Realy realy realy realistic
You've done the background by 3D or by digital art work ? (like by electronic pad or mouse Oo)

Thanks, I was going for realism in this one (or as real as a fictional world can look) many of my works are a mix of 3D and 2D, which means many use both mouse and drawing tablet...However this one is about 99% pure 3D and so, done by mouse there's small areas drawn in or edite din Photoshop, but it's mainly 3D

If you don't mind freakishly huge anemone-like trees that can move at their own will, then go ahead

very cool, I love these kind of alien-plant landscapes! I particularly the tentacley ones in the water.
Sorry you didn't place as well in the contest as you would have liked, I know how frustrating that is, but it's great looking piece for your portfolio.

Glad you like e'm, since there's bound to be more alien plant scenes in the future, paced out amongst various others Hmm, guess this would be an interest portfolio addition, since I can't choose too many without cramping the thing
Yeah, I think we both have had times where contests feel so biased, most of the times I gracefully admit deafeat since I only win 1 in every 8 or so contests I enter without complaining, but this time - well, some of the finalist's work was really bland and cliche

this is beautiful and original. poot that they chose cliche pictures. as for those trees, i wonder what would happen if you climb up and sit on them! LOL

Thanks, oh well, at least the people that matter to me value the originality the others were sure very good and ultra-real, but yeah - very Cliche and nothing I havn't seen a million times over in the landscape galleries
as for those trees, I think the tops might be the most dangerous area, the tentacles would probably close in much like that of an anemone

Thanks! well I guess many 30 of those hours were actual working time (still a lot I guess, but I was trying lots of new things and having to make up for failed attempts along the way ) a lot was also getting the best composition and lighting for such a scene, trying to get an unusual landscape to look as realistic as I could
oh well, I guess it's another pretty picture for my gallery in the very least

Somewhere in the universe this planet exists, I mean it's too beautiful not too! And somewhere on their planet the teen alien who is on the computer goes, "Look mom! Someone took a picture of our backyard!" Bravo! Another stunning beautiful piece!

Chromattix In reply to Soundwave-1 [2009-08-02 13:49:08 +0000 UTC]
Lol, it would be so weird if this planet were discovered by us hundreds or thousands of years from now, they'll dig into the internet archives and find this old thing and go "whoa, this guy must have been the new Nostre Damus" (I may have spelt that wrong )
If aliens could pick up on our signals, I bet they'd have a blast eavesdropping on Earthian culture but something tells me our signals from we we first started using the internet regularly still have a long way to go across the vastness of space before they're picked up by our nearest neighbours

I feel that, although your deviations have been getting more original and your ideas more creative and unique, you lost a bit of the general impact of the final images. To me, originality is just a subcategory of the overal impact. =S

Chromattix In reply to Aridax [2009-08-02 04:14:32 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I've been battling whether I should focus on doing more original stuff, or just do what everyone has seen plenty of times before, but be assured that its still good. Problem with trying new things is that they rarely come out as good as what I'm used to...not that I consider this to be original though

Lol, I actually think these plants would be the most fear-inducing so far, they look like the first ones I've made that can potentially move and be carnivorous but they'll still be very sluggish and easy to avoid

Damn. I don't know how you do these things. I love the planet in the background. It looks like it's about to plow into the mid ground of the planet in front. Color, texture, accuracy of reflection... what did the other people in the competition have that you didn't?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to faeriechick [2009-08-01 14:58:55 +0000 UTC]
Lol, funny you should say that about the planet, since in the 3D scene file, to get it to look like it was over the horizon, I actually had to put part of it below ground-level, so technically, it has crashed into the ground, even though I intended it to look distant and rising over the horizon
The others were certainly very realistic, more than this even. But that's just the thing - realism is very limited and many were no different to the generic photo's of landscapes I see every day, I just wanted to make something more original and imaginative, but I guess that wasn't in my favour
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
faeriechick In reply to Chromattix [2009-08-01 15:24:15 +0000 UTC]
That is pretty funny. haha
Oh, I guess the realism thing really... rules the show.. in some places. And remember? Society is constrictive and doesn't like originality. Well, a little bit's ok, but give them any more than that and they're like, "OMG u did not just do that." And of course you, as the artist, are just wondering what planet they came from. haha

I took a look at the finalists, and I've gotta say that some of those entries were pretty awe inspiring (like jaw on floor inspiring) to someone like me who has a pretty limited knowledge of Vue.
That said, yours would have been the most original by leaps and bounds... you'd think they'd want to represent and promote that Vue can be used as creatively as you've done!
Just about all the finalist pieces are executed near-flawlessly to my eye, but imo only a minority show any sort of originality.
Anyway, really great piece with awesome imagination!

Chromattix In reply to JustinSlick [2009-08-01 13:20:32 +0000 UTC]
That's exactly what I think! all of them are good from a technical point of view, very realistic
But they also encouraged originality and very few of those peices were scenes I have not seen done in Vue before. I think mine here would have been a unique marketing tool showing that Vue can go above and beyond conventional landscapes if the user is cretaive enough
but oh well
Glad you like it though

Awesome job man, that sucks about not making it in the finals. 50 hours is a lot and i think you deserve a mention at the least because you've created yet another absolutely amazing art piece.
Keep it up man, you won in my books

Chromattix In reply to lilando [2009-08-01 08:08:24 +0000 UTC]
Thanks man Yeah, rarely would any Vue user spend that long on a scene, it's a pretty convenient program when it comes to saving time on an artwork. But I was exploring all the possible compositional scenarios and such and trying out a lot of things to get the best result (evident in that this is nothing like what I originally imagined, but was better than my original idea anyway
)

Nifty! looks like an alien planet indeed, the plants are cool! they look aquatic, I wouldn't want to touch some of those, as I'm sure they would spit good in my eyes and then harpoon me with ling tongs they grab prey with.

Lol, very colourful hypothetical situation there I wouldn't get too close to them either, they look like they have various ways of finding food, they could be sticky and once you touch, you can't let go, or the classic stinging-tentacles could always work
