Description This was my entry to the e-on software's Vue environment competition for this year, sadly I didn't even make it to the finals, rendering the 50+ hours I spent on this utterly useless, only to be beaten by some of the most mundayne and generic-looking Vue scenes I've seen an dthat I could have made in an afternoon using little mor ethan what the program provides you with. So much for originality in a landscape being taken into account, there's only a few finalists that I felt deserved to be there

Anyway, the original entry had no postwork (since it wasn't allowed) but this dA version here did have a little bit of it just to fix up some areas and make it look a little more natural, but nothing that I couldn't do in a single session. The actual 3D part is what took forever, modelling those weird alien plants in Cinema 4D was a pain, so was finding a creative way to make the surrounding landscape. Even the planets are pure 3D models, scaled up huge and pushed way beyond Vue's world limits, all materials are procedural too (but afte rthe final render I did overlay some faint rock texture on the rocky cliffs)

My comment here has just focused on the process of making it this time, there's surprisingly little to say about the concept itself, jut another one of my weird alien landscapes

Amazing! I bet they didn't believe it was made with Vue, so they didn't choose it! They probably want pieces that reflect what you can do when you jump straight into Vue, which is sad, because this shows what you can do with a lot of experience and imagination. (and no offence, but I'm sure you're not the only one to show what you can do with both). If people could see this sort of stuff, they'd have a much bigger market!

Very good comment much of it is true, there are some parts that probably don't look like they were direct 3D in Vue (well, this version here has been Photoshopped, but the contest version didn't) and the only outside program that was used was Cinema 4D to make those larger plants, but even so, all their texturing and such was done in Vue anyway, as was everything else. I thought it showed that Vue can go really far with some creative thinking, but I guess it wasn't enough too bad, I think this would have been an eye-catching marketing image too, this one would turn more heads than a picture of a mountain or island that we always see in Photo's anyway

Awww... You're still #1 in my book. Next to Wen-JR and Monty Oum. ^_^ It really takes 50+ hours to make something like THAT?!?! You make it look REALLY easy. -.-' Great job btw.

Lol, I've only herad of one of those two ;XD: I surprisingly don't watch most of the good 3D artists here, many illustarte the sorts of things I'm interested in so I'm really glad mine interests you then

Now that I have gotten used to the programs, I do admit that I can do most things rather easily provided it's something I've done before (like landscapes for example) but even so, it just takes forever to make everything

Me too. I tend to stay away from artist more talented than me because... I don't like to be looked down upon.
And I agree that it is much easier to get the job done better when you've gotten to know your program very well. Practice makes perfect. ^_^

There is none other that respects your work as I do. I "Play" with Vue Infinite 6.0 and drool when I see your works... I dream of having your 'touch' and using that artistic ability/out-of-the-box thinking you have to be able to apply simple backgrounds in my work.

This is definitely far more original than the images I saw from the competition. (yes, I got the email from e-onsoftware.com yesterday and spent some time looking at the images from the finalist)

The next statements are said from respect for all you do on DA and your incredible talent.... so do not take this the wrong way... ((Please ???... warm-grin)).

The first thing I look for in any Vue image is "Is it believable?"...."Does it look real?"... your past works have been there! They were believable. This is very unique but it lacks the believability you've spent so much time on in past images.

The plants on the right 1/3 are just too crisp, the overall color/lighting is just somehow off a bit... too bright??? It doesn't blend together as much as your previous images. Purely my opinion but I see Rich colors coming through and all this is "washed-out" a little.

I REALLY think you were going the right direction and with enough time would have made this a virtual masterpiece.... but it 'appears' rushed and not as finished as your previous works. (I do understand the render times... ((huge sigh)) )

Again... I'm a novice at Vue and speaking out of place... I'm hoping to offer constructive advice... ((although I'd have no idea how to get to where you need to go... sigh)). Please don't take this poorly. I still consider you the MASTER at 3D renders!

don't give up on this piece (unless it bores/disgusts you).... have fun with it and keep working on it.. There IS something there and with yout talent I trust you can bring it out...

okay.. I've WAY over spoken myself... (please understand this said from adoration of your work and NOT cutting you down)....

take care!
robert

A realistic scene in Vue shouldn't be too hard, I think maybe the lighting would have a lot to do with it. But yeah, since your'e using real models, you would need higher expectations of realism too, at least enough to trick people into thinking it's one solid image. Just make sure the lighting on the scene is the same as on the model, no point making a sunset manipulation with a daytime-shot model

Many of the plants do appear rather solid instead of leafy, mainly because they were inspired more from marine invertebrates than actual plants. I remembe rmaking some custom plants that actually had leaves, but I couldn't find a place for them here (oh well, two more aline plants that I didn't have before, I'll save them for a more appropriate sci-fi scene)

Well, since I'm out of the competition, there's really no point me adding more or changing anything. I'll leave it as is. I have a bette rlooking scene coming up soon anyway. Plus this one has a big file size and moving and changing anything as I was nearing the end of it became a slow and painful process and it was getting on my nerves...If I had a more powerful computer, I could have done so much more

I doubt I'd ever make video tutorials, maybe just regular read-ones one day. Some things weren't done just in Vue though which complicates things even more. Others use dmethods that already have been explained, like the rock formations were made after following a tutorial on making elaborate rocks in Vue by =nukeation

I'm thinking a good game for you to play is Spore ( I believe that's what it's called). You make EVERYTHING, planets, worlds, species, buildings, etc. I'd get the game myself, but my archaic PMSing computer doesn't have the memory (even though it does, but keeps saying it doesn't. I swear the fickle thing gorges its bitchy self on its own memory.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Rhinestone-D [2009-08-01 02:49:16 +0000 UTC]

Lol, SPORE looks interesting, but something tells me I might be limited to the boundaries of the game and I might lose interest. In my art however, working in 3D almost make sit feel like a game, but I'm free to create anything I want from scratch and keep going until 1. - I have worked long enough and consider it done, or 2. - my computer keeps crashing because the file size is too big and I have to call a quits and accept it as is

I get the same program when I try to use Vue, it's telling me my video board's driver is obsolete or something, which is stupid sinc emy laptop isn't even a year old yet. Bah, it still runs pretty well, and problems like that are more effort than what solving them is worth anyway

the finalists are all blah-regular-landscape-that-i-could-have-taken-a-picture-of sort of pieces (well i suppose the ice one is okay...)
the judges could have chosen some more original pieces of art. *sigh* well i can't do anything about it so...

Chromattix In reply to Yank76 [2009-08-01 02:36:27 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I warned ya! actually, I don't think I did, but nor did I willingly say go and look either yeah, some of those scenes are very easy to make with Vue's default plants and such, it's a matter of making a hill (which takes like - 5 seconds in Vue) and then covering it with the preset plants of your choice instantly, some of those entries I could have made the same in an hour Mine made use of many of Vue's underused features to make a landscape using the most unlikely tools that 90% of Vue users don't even touch.

I actually liked the ice one the most too! I hope that wins, or at leats the terraforming one, those were the most original-looking ones of the finalists I think

JaredTheDragon In reply to ??? [2009-07-31 17:59:55 +0000 UTC]

I've always considered your usage of Vue to be the most original, especially since you make most if not all of your own models and render crazy, awesome worlds with it! Don't be discouraged by the lack of mainstream attention; think about all the Renderosity "art" you see for example... 90% naked poser chicks, 5% horrible beginner artwork, and the other 5% decent work gets lost in the mix almost entirely.

I haven't gone to look at the Vue winners, because I had a feeling it would be entirely disheartening.

But don't consider this one wasted time at all, my friend! It looks great, and you've done well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to JaredTheDragon [2009-08-01 02:18:35 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou! Yeah, with so many Vue users using just Vue on it's own (which is fine, I love seeing the renders) I feel obligated to make mine different than the mainstream by incorporating my own models, plants and of course - postwork, which is probably the same reason why mine didn't get the mainstream attention in the competition, sinc emine Vue scenes aren't mainstream ones

But oh well, at least they get a lot of attention on dA, few Vue users can say that, so in their faces still, it would have been nice to be lokked at and maybe contacted by one of those major-league companies, I need something to get my foot in the door

I don't go to Renderosity purely because I expect just what you said! it wouldn't be too different from the 3D galleries on dA, most of which is naked Poser chicks or begginner stuff too, the ones that are actually "good" are often of boring subjects I've seen a million times like cars, robots or bedrooms

Oh, yu can still look at the finalists, some are really great (I liked the one titled "ice" the most) but there's just a handful there that I felt could been beaten my mine, and some of the other's entries

Interesting view with the perspective, and one of the most impressive aspects here is the subtle reflection of the tentacle plants in the water below them.
