Description This was my entry to the e-on software's Vue environment competition for this year, sadly I didn't even make it to the finals, rendering the 50+ hours I spent on this utterly useless, only to be beaten by some of the most mundayne and generic-looking Vue scenes I've seen an dthat I could have made in an afternoon using little mor ethan what the program provides you with. So much for originality in a landscape being taken into account, there's only a few finalists that I felt deserved to be there

Anyway, the original entry had no postwork (since it wasn't allowed) but this dA version here did have a little bit of it just to fix up some areas and make it look a little more natural, but nothing that I couldn't do in a single session. The actual 3D part is what took forever, modelling those weird alien plants in Cinema 4D was a pain, so was finding a creative way to make the surrounding landscape. Even the planets are pure 3D models, scaled up huge and pushed way beyond Vue's world limits, all materials are procedural too (but afte rthe final render I did overlay some faint rock texture on the rocky cliffs)

My comment here has just focused on the process of making it this time, there's surprisingly little to say about the concept itself, jut another one of my weird alien landscapes

Lol, yeah, I think the old sci-fi movies and artwork - although unrealistic by today's standards, can still be a good source of inspiration (not that I'd watch any,, my shallow mind when it comes to visual effects means I couldn't watch those old movies without sitting there and pointing out EVERY flaw "oh look, I can see the strings!" )

Lol, the contest has already been ennounced though, it was private so all entrants couldn't post their work anywhere until the finalists were announced, so I actually made this a few weeks ago and had to "store" it to myself until now

I saw this looking at the contest entries, and to be honest I'm very surprised it wasn't in there

Superb work though

There were some other great and orginal ones I felt should have been in too, I loved that cave one with all the stalactites So I guess I'm not the only one that should have been in but wasn't Still, if they were only interested in upmost realism and not originality, then they shouldn't have put so much emphasis on it, and then maybe I would have done something more realistic like the other Erath-like scenes in there

Who knows, maybe these ARE animals (but they would be simple, like marine invertebrates found along the shores of Earth ) some look pretty capable of moving after all

Chromattix In reply to futarinokizuna [2009-07-31 14:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Your artworks look perfectly fine as they are, I'm surprised you would need someone else's background. But I'm afraid I don't allow such usage of my work. I suppose you could use it as a "dummy background" to temporarily fill in the gaps when drawing a character, but once done that - you'll have to make your own one in place of it or use a stock image

Even with the amount of time you spent on this, it doesn't look as aesthetically pleasing as those in the finals.

The contest's finalists all had some natural and very vast pieces, while yours is small and cluttered with odd looking things.

The techniques and time you put into this picture make it definitely worth looking at, and while colorful and vibrant, when you compare it to the others, I don't think it really fit in with what they were looking for in this competition.

Just my two cents, love your art man!

Chromattix In reply to daioushin [2009-07-31 14:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess the finalists were very good from a technical point of view, even the few plain-looking ones could be passed off as photo's, but still - they also encouraged originality and cretaivity, and while everyone has seen hills and planets before, I bet no-one has conceived these bizarre alien...things like I have but oh well, it's wate runder the bridge now anyway, I just havn't ranted about anything in a long time

actually I think the famous architect Antonio Gaudi will fall in love with your work. If only he was still alive...

Chromattix In reply to Little-kaiyou-Kame [2009-07-31 14:24:52 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, if we got the photo of the alien planet, technically - WE are the invaders ahh looks like there's nothing more than simple invertebrates here anyway

I'm afraid I have never heard of Antonio Gaudi, shows how much I know about the art world beyond dA

Little-kaiyou-Kame In reply to Chromattix [2009-08-05 15:53:18 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Ok go google the "Sagrada Familia", it's one of the world's most famous cathedrals because of the fact that it is unfinished. It's the work of Antonio Gaudi I've been to the sagrada when I was in spain and it was an amazing experience! The whole design was quirky and...not really the typical cathedral u see. Not that your work is quirky, haha. I meant it's uniquely different, something Gaudi would like ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to VerdantStrike [2009-07-31 14:21:46 +0000 UTC]

Either that or some were partially blind, part of me thinks they may deliberately include average-looking scenes in the finals along with the obviously great ones so there's no false hope when the judging comes, since there's three positions as well as three (out of 12) finalists that are head and shoulders above the rest There's no room for the "middle-ground" guy like me

Oh well, there's always next year's one

Thanks a lot Getting a bizarre and off-coloured alien landscape to look natural and realistic is very hard Some of the others were very good and I think ther emight be a clear-cut winner or two in there, so I'd be setting the bar too high if I expected this to come first, but yeah - some of the other finalists were kinda plain-looking

Lol, the important thing is that you tried Glad you enjoyed it, yeah the tutorials are often done by masters who have a full comprehension of everything. I don't think I could learn like that, I wa slucky to have had an actual, physical teacher for the 3D I did when starting out, it's certainly more harder to learn than 2D which is more like traditional drawing

This looks even cooler with those cracks, I don't remember they were there on your submission to the competition, but they make the HTs look much more natural. You already know my opinion about the rest of the scene
And a little more about the contest; don't worry and don't feel sad about it, cuz it's just one way of the million to show yourself to the world, and you have already achieved a high level. The time you work on a scene is not everything either; I worked on a scene for 3 days and it didn't really bring what I expected, but oh well, two days later I composed a random scene (Out of the city) in an hour, posted it to C3D, and within an hour I received the message about Out of the city and that project I can't talk about yet
Just keep posting your great work, because e-on is looking for masterful scenes....ohh
