Description
This was my entry to the e-on software's Vue environment competition for this year, sadly I didn't even make it to the finals, rendering the 50+ hours I spent on this utterly useless, only to be beaten by some of the most mundayne and generic-looking Vue scenes I've seen an dthat I could have made in an afternoon using little mor ethan what the program provides you with. So much for originality in a landscape being taken into account, there's only a few finalists that I felt deserved to be thereAnyway, the original entry had no postwork (since it wasn't allowed) but this dA version here did have a little bit of it just to fix up some areas and make it look a little more natural, but nothing that I couldn't do in a single session. The actual 3D part is what took forever, modelling those weird alien plants in Cinema 4D was a pain, so was finding a creative way to make the surrounding landscape. Even the planets are pure 3D models, scaled up huge and pushed way beyond Vue's world limits, all materials are procedural too (but afte rthe final render I did overlay some faint rock texture on the rocky cliffs)
My comment here has just focused on the process of making it this time, there's surprisingly little to say about the concept itself, jut another one of my weird alien landscapes

Thanks! those cracks in the rocks were drawn in after I rendered it, so yeah - they wouldn't have been on the contest version since that would have counted as postwork.
That's true about the time I guess, My problem is not so much figuring out what to do (I knew how to make everything ) But it just takes a long time (especially when self-made models are needed, like on the larger alien plants) plus there's finding a nice composition, and even extra's, like finding a goos lighting and atmosphere too (the sky was almost going to be a desaturated brownish-green, but it didn't do it any justice) But yeah, I guess I just gotta stop eing so picky dammit
Good luck on your super-duper secret missions too

hahhaha thanks ...and yeah it sucks that postwork is not allowed at all, they should allow at least some minor color or contrast corrections. There's a space scene in the final I really like, though I simply can't believe that the guy ("Wasteland") didn't do any postwork on the image. That's a real badass render

Yep, though there was a surprisingly small amount of Photoshop this time

Wow...I can't believe you weren't among the finalists!
This is really great. : ) If I tried to make a 3D landscape I would fail miserably. I'm really envious of how great you are at this!

Thanks. Normally when I don't make it to the finalists of any competition, there's often a valid reason why and so I swallow my pride and don't pout about it. But this is one incredibly rare moment where I just can't understand what some of the other finalists are doing there Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk I guess
3D landscapes can be pretty hard in some ways, Vue makes certain things much easier in 3D landscapes, but I still spend forever composing everything and making as much of my own 3D models and whatnot as I can, and yeah - that's the confusing part, the 3D modelling from scratch, fortunately I can use Photoshop to enhance any flawed 3D work

Well, there ya go! You've done it again! You created a Masterpiece! You are obviously, like any great artist, your own worst critic! And I have this sneaky suspicion and get this deep down Soul feeling that you have a whole lot of confidence in your Self and you work....ah, so there you have within, already, The Master Key ....continue unlocking and unleashing all that you are....Onward Great Artist Onward!

Maybe so, the being my own worst critic part that is, there's always something about each peice I don't like. But after a certain amount of time spent on an artwork, I think any artist has to decide that it's time to stop and move on to the next. Like my others, this one had a good run and managed to stave off boredom for a week

It's gorgeous! I don't know about the red tentacle-y plants though..they look at little too alike? Like they were copied and pasted. Some variation in their spiny branch thingys would be nice.
Looks great though!

I actually have three unique models there, the two next to each other have the same number of muscle-like segments on their "trunks" if you were to count radially (I think it's 8) but one has more segments vertically than the other, and the bigger one has both more segments vertically and has 10 radial lumps on it, OH, and the tentacle son top are all slightly different too (that bit was made easy since the tentacles were modified by a preset Vue anemone that automatically generates a new variation each time you use it ) Lol, so the three up front are all different, but yeah - the background ones are duplicates
Anyway, that wasn't critically important imformation, but since it's on the first page, I thoughy others might have found that response interesting too thanks for faving!
