Description Still havn't given up on these floating landscapes and have a few ideas left for future ones too. But something tells me I have already crossed the halfway point, since even I don't want to be doing them forever, otherwise the concept will become stale and repetitive

So! Since I knew this one would have been an otherwise "boring" theme (nothing fun about grey skies and rainy days) I had to compensate for it's lack of vivid colours like in the others by (hopefully- giving it a much better sense of depth inside the storm clouds, along with a cool sci-fi city theme responsible for making lightning and trying a more conventional way of digital painting that just makes more sense. If anything, it will help add to my matte-painting practice even though almost no Photo's were used, the island was originally 3D but the raw render was very quick and shitty as I knew it was just going to be a base for a digital painting anyway. So I think what may have been the dullest floating island of the lot now has the most powerful conceptand impression (or at least I hope )

Each island has at least something flying around it, I figured helicopters were the best choice for the "action" kind of feel Oh, and I have also depicted every type of weather imaginable in my past works at leats once before...but surprisingly, this is the first deviation I've made were it's actually raining

Oh, and credits for the helicopter-stocks go to Image*After.com everything else was drawn or shot by myself.

EDIT: - took some critiques and rotated the island to give an unstable turbulence to the scene (was perfectly straight before) Also added that dowards misty effect to add more "volume" to the rain and frame it off a bit!

Others in the set of floating islands so far...

Tropical island = Hang gardens
Morning village = High rise
City at night = Night flight
Snowy ski-lifts = Ski skies
Haunted house = Crypto night

So cool, there are two things i love most here: Islands and clouds. And the concept is fantastic. This supposed to be civilization controlling nature?

Chromattix In reply to CrownedCloud [2016-06-20 04:04:22 +0000 UTC]

Same here. One could say a lone cloud is like an island in the sky in itself. I remember as a kid when I used to believe in the idea of "angels on the clouds" I'd wonder how often they got stranded on one when it broke apart from another, and then dissipated, resulting in a smaller and smaller platform to stand on. Better hope those wings were functional and not just for aesthetics

In this scene here I imagined an almost steampunk-esque airship of some sorts (well, and island anyway rather than a true airship) with a race of people (or creatures perhaps) who probably had something to hide, or some kind of agenda that kept them hidden in storm clouds, generating extra lightning. No particular reason why - I just thought it looked cool

You and i have a lot in common ^^ and i do agree, clouds do seem like islands of they own.

And i smell a story to go with that

Wow, I like this! It's a thick contrast between the exotic paradises you usually paint with the industrial skyline. I also like the addition of the helicopters because to me it reminds me of a crime scene investigation, but rather than action I feel like it has a suspicious undercover vibe to it like some kind of evil secret agenda could be hidden in the factory
Lol nice, I should've discovered this earlier.

Chromattix In reply to DTKinetic [2012-09-08 03:31:46 +0000 UTC]

Lol, you discovered it a few years late. But it's nice to get a new comment on something old and forgotten

Yeah the helicopters (created from stock images since I can't draw them for shit ) added a sense of activity going on here. Indeed something is up in that factory. It's up to the imagination of the viewer

Cool! I'm one of the few that got featured twice too. Which is strange since there's so much better in some of the others

Cities or anything with buildings is something I'd like to draw as comfortably as my landscapes. Without 3D though it's very hard, one I'm doing now only requires relatively simple old-style architecture and that has taken ridiculously long
