I did use a reference, but I have no idea where I got it from. Not all the references I use are online, I use a lot of equine books as well.

I would love to try to color this but I dont have a tablet and I dont know how to mix the colors very well o.O any suggestions?

Other than that, maybe just check out the huge amount of painting tutorials on devArt? I'm sure there are some that deal with painting with a mouse
And my best tip would be just to play around in your graphics programme and put lots of time into it.
