Question... I have always had trouble with this and haven't been able to figure it out for years, most tutorials don't put it in, but once you've finished the shading and highlights; where do you put the colored layer with markings(and such) and what setting? If you have an answer that'd be great
Lovely tutorial by the way!

You have to make another layer and paint over the shading with the desired color that you want then by the layers area there should be a drop down menu that's default is set at normal. Click on that and go down to overlay then play with everything as desired

how do you get your brush to the fade on each side? without a tablet
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chronically In reply to Trooper18 [2012-03-08 10:10:10 +0000 UTC]
I don't think you can without a tablet because the fade is pen pressure sensitive. And you don't have pressure sensitivity with a mouse

Sorry, I don't know... I don't think it works on gimp because it's a completely different piece of software. Maybe you can try playing around with gimp yourself?

Hay, I hope you can have a look at this: [link]
It's just the partial result of how your tutorial has helped me out =3 The picture is at 25% zoom, but I love the softness that I've been able to achieve with it :3 Thank you.

Oh I see, well thanks either way I got so much trouble with shading, which sucks - 'cause I love drawing but it ain't that fun when you can't shade your horse

Do you highlight with white transparent brush? :3
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chronically In reply to The-whist-hound [2011-04-28 21:49:14 +0000 UTC]
no I usually pick a light highlight colour that isn't white White can really make a horse look like plastic, so I tend to go for a more natural colour.

This tutorial was very helpful! I'm a beginner at digital art and I couldn't get the shading right. But with help from this tutorial it looks a lot better than before! Thank you!

question, did you draw on the tablet or scan this to the computer....i ask because I'm having hell using my tablet, Can't draw a good circle for crying out loud!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chronically In reply to Backlash91 [2011-03-09 18:58:35 +0000 UTC]
ah well, you can do either
It depends for me. Sometimes I've sketched something on paper, then I just scan it and go over the lines digitally with my tablet. Other times I have a digital sketch and do the lines with a tablet as well.
I do always go over the lines with a hard 5-7px brush though, I never leave the pencil lines visible.

really? ...intersting. I have CS5 with a small tablet, but it seems like I can't get the hang of making the pen curve right. thankyou though for the info, it sounds like some of the badass drawings and images i see here are first hand drawn and then put on photoshop for coloring....or i'm just REAAALLY bad at digital drawing, ha ha!

When I bought my pen tablet it came with some PS elements... (7.0) Would you know how different it is from the real 7.o version? I can't find some of the things on here that you where talking about and I looked everywhere... Nice tutorial and line arts though Very nice of you to make a tutorial for us

chronically In reply to blondi97 [2010-12-30 21:07:42 +0000 UTC]
I'm afraid that elements and photoshop 7.0 are very different!
I've personally only used the regular photoshop so I wouldn't be able to help you

"Truth is there is no secret" YAY! you are so right. I am always at a loss when someone asked me how I shade my pictures. And when I answer something like "Well I just paint in the shadows and lights. I use a brush for this..." - lets just say this answer seems to be not very satisfiing XD

chronically In reply to JanaW [2010-12-05 18:25:23 +0000 UTC]
^exactly! Which is always what makes it hard for me when people ask for a tutorial... They always expect it to be the perfect guide that they can follow and then create the perfect image.
It's really difficult to make a tutorial xD

JanaW In reply to chronically [2010-12-05 18:54:51 +0000 UTC]
Yep, thats why I only make tutorials for specific details of a drawing. And never go into detail how to shade exactly. IMO everyone has to find their own technique. That needs time and practise. But in topic: some days ago I got a mail that I just had to keep:
"Hello there. I have GIMP2 now and I wanted to ask, if I can edit pictures with it - and maybe paint my own pictures, too. If I can, could you please send me a short Tutorial how so?"
Sooo sorry, but I could find my short "How to became a painter in one week"-tutorial at the moment^^

It doesn't annoy me when people ask if I can make a tutorial. It DOES annoy me when they ask it like they're asking you what time it is.
"So if you could just make me a tutorial, that'd be great."
I guess they don't realize how much time it takes xD

Its almost like "Could you help me with that eye/mane/something and you say "sure, I ll make a few brushstrokes so you will see what you have to do" and they answer "uhhh, could you make it complete. looks better your way"...
I mean, what the heck? I realy love to help, but I will not paint otherones pictures and dont have time for my own
