Description My first tutorial! Sorry things are a little out of order...
The horse in progress is Godiva, and I might do a tutorial for the background when I add one to it!

Hope it helps a little bit.

PLEASE DOWNLOAD for best viewing.

ps. didn't proofread... ignore the typos. also, i was really sloppy. in between step 1 and 2, make sure you're coloring on the layer in between the background and the lineart.

if you try it and have any more questions just ask and i can clarify for you/anyone else.

I am saving up for a tablet, which one is the best you think and how much is it?

I think you'd be fine with any Bamboo tablet (that's what I use). You can probably pick up an older model for under $70, or new the less professional ones are still very affordable (around $100). I have to say, I just "upgraded" to a newer model, and it doesn't seem to have the same quality as the older ones (the nibs on the pens wear away so fast they give you replacements with the tablet. I have never had to replace the nib on my old one which I had for over 4 years).

Any chance you would be able to make a line-art tutorial I love it Helps alot

copied from my reply elsewhere:

i'm not sure a lining tutorial would be very helpful, unless you are interested in canvas size, pen type, etc. i think the best 'tutorial' for lining is to just draw draw draw.

Any chance you could make a tut on how to shade blacks? lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cobra-farms In reply to SpringHillFarm [2012-03-27 16:20:45 +0000 UTC]

same way, just dont start w/ a dark dark black, start w/ a medium black and shade w/ a light/med grey

i also never use pure black, except for lines.

if you want to add more depth, you can put some browns/reds or blues in there too, but i'm usually too lazy.

You are very talented but I have to say something.
Horsehooves don't have stripes like that. Never. Only sick ones. Stripes are allways going from top to bottom

cobra-farms In reply to CheezayBallz [2010-10-29 15:58:06 +0000 UTC]

hmm are you talking about the black lines in striped hooves? or the ridges? if you look at a hoof, you'll see both vertical and horizontal ridges. The various colors (not from stripes) will go vertically and horizontally, although sometimes one direction dominates when you look at the hoof.

because i don't choose to focus extensively on the hoof (it would be weird looking to make the hoof extremely detailed and the rest not), i combine the shading (the darker being behind the hoof, the lights being in the front) with the direction of the horizontal ridges or coloring. this especially makes sense because if you look at a horse from afar, you're probably going to see something that looks a little like what i've done. and, in a way, the lines aren't necessarily meant to be literal lines going across the foot, but to capture the texture of a rougher surface with color variation. anyway, this horse's feet are slightly covered by the grass, but you can see what i'm talking about: [link]

as an aside, i've found plenty of pictures of hooves in which you can see horizontal bands. they look decently healthy to me, although i'm no hoof expert.

you can see both horizontal and vertical lines in this one:

thanks for your comment though!
