To go along with the revamp of CJ I posted earlier today (www.deviantart.com/chronically… ), I also wanted to post this design of her adoptive umbrum father, Obsidian! Obsidian was initially conceptualized as a redesign for another character, but I was more than happy to recycle his concept and breathe new life into him after he was never used in his old narrative! I took heavy inspirations from the likes of John Wick and Silco from Arcane, and I'm very pleased with him so far.

Like the character he was originally based on, Obsidian is CJ's guardian and crime boss — but in "In Your Shadow," he and CJ meet in Canterlot when she is just a filly and on the run from her abusive guardians. Fresh off the loss of his wife and birth child in an unprovoked attack and newly returned to the criminal world after a precious few years of blissful domestic retirement, Obsidian is a mess of a shadow stallion and then some. This runaway filly becomes the light of his life when he saves her from a gang of vampony thugs and ultimately welcomes her into his life as his daughter. Although Obsidian's thirst for vengeance continues long after he embraces his old paternal role, he is able to find a much better balance between his criminal exploits and familial pursuits with CJ around, restoring some of his lost old self in the process. The two grow absolutely inseparable and remain crucial figures in each other's lives for years to come.
