Started a mage playthrough myself today. My reaction was pretty much the same as yours.
Though I do still harbour the theory that he was just kidding about not knowing what we were.

I had the exact same reaction when I approached him as a mage! What's worse is when he or others say, "Really? You don't look like a mage." Really? The mage hat, robes and staff didn't give you a hint? (Ditto on the whole "oppression as an elf" bit. I played as a city elf and mage elf back-to-back.)

LOL A sentiment I can't disagree with. Though one does wonder, if she chooses opt 4 if maybe she's okay with them being a little dumb so long as they're hot? I mean, he eventually comes into his own, but anyone attracted to him at the outset is really doing that thing where they're in the "aww, cute but dumb...I'd still do him" frame of mind.
