What i would wonder is... would such a metamorphosis be temporary, or permanent?

i would prefer it as temporal because in the contrary case they would be unable of sire childs and that could affect the tiemline of the legend of korra.

If it was permanent, there wouldn't be any challenge for our benders anymore.
I'd see it as a sort of temporary "super form", like Aang's Avatar state. Something that can be used in extreme situations when there's little alternative left. Naturally, there'd be drawbacks to limit its use, like requiring pure mental focus to the point of tiring oneself out after the effects wear off, but the payoff would be worth it.

Hmm i disagree as to the none permanacy. Make it permenant and they know it so the have the dillimea of sacrificing their humanity for power to end the Fire lord. Make its so that they have to have a strong will to maintain form and cohession so that fatituge could weaken the to possibly an unconsious state. Or you could have it like the girls dont know it would be permenant so after the war is over they go on a quest to change back but do to being in this Immortal forms the are being to lose touch with their humanity and a becoming just another part of their element. (Forgive my horrible spelling.)
