Spinning the Gears in our Lives

I see you standing there
just looking out the picture window
of our one bedroom apartment
the look of concern in your eyes
I know that I've done wrong
I know I don't deserve forgiveness
by any definition of the word.

"It's all because of him!"
this you scream at me from across the kitchen
then you let me know I'm an idiot
by throwing my plate at me
still full of food
you're still a crack shot with a dinner plate
I love will always love that about you.

I can't help but think back
back to November
when we met
it was Joe and Sarah's wedding
you looked stunning your pink bridesmaid dress
I was only introduced to you because
well because Joe played have you met Charles
I hated him for it until I saw you smile
then I didn't regret it.

The first thing you said to me was
"You have a stain on your tie."
and you tricked me into looking at nothing
from that point on I knew we were destined to see the beginning
and the end
it doesn't matter how soon the end came.

So I see you by the picture window
of our one bedroom apartment
and I know where you're going
and that I'm not involved with it
and that knowledge would hurt if I knew that I didn't deserve it.

I still look into your big brown eyes
those eyes that I fell in love with some many years ago
now I'm lucky if I get to look into them
once a month
or even every other week
but I know what I did wrong
and that you need to leave
just simply for you to make sense with your life
I know I can't keep dragging you down with me
we've both been running holding the matches
just waiting to throw them on the deck of the ship
so we can watch it burn to the ground
doesn't matter if we're both on board
hell it'll probably be better if we are
because that way we know that we can't rebuild.

So I look at you and ask
"Do you want any help with your bags?"
and I mean it honestly
you just simply look at me
and reply
"That would be nice."
we can see the cab pull up
I know this will be the last time I ever see you
I give you a hug as I load up your bags
then wave bye
and watch the taillights fade
this is the least I deserve.
